Kia ora Gracecity.

A few months before I was diagnosed with burnout in 2019, I endured some months of major sleep deprivation. Was facing major pastoral and leadership challenge, and my sleep was wrecked for a period of about 2 months. Before then, used to sleep incredibly well – use to joke had spiritual gift of sleeping! But that lack of sleep and its impact on overall physical wellbeing, helped take me down road to burnout.

We in series launched last week on “Wellbeing.” And having thought about biblical idea of wellbeing or shalom last week a kicked off series, today consider first key area of wellbeing in lives – physical.

– Physical wellbeing

Now what’s interesting is that while many Christians are really interested in idea of physical wellbeing, others are not. Doesn’t sound very spiritual, very biblical. And so need consider question this morning, “Is it even right for Christians to think and talk about physical wellbeing? Why not just focus on the spiritual?”

Our problem is that we can fall into two opposite but equally deadly myths. The first is this:

Myth #1 – Our body is everything

Many people in world today think that. Philosophically and scientifically, simply collection of atoms that part of physical world. Nothing else to us or the universe or life. And when die, we die, that’s it.

Or a completely different way this myth expresses itself is culturally through our obsession with our bodies – advertising, pornography, beauty industry, even health and exercise industries built around this total focus on our appearance and body image. Becomes an obsession!

In fact, a recent study by Bradley University in USA found 95% of people – men and women – struggled with negative body image. 95% - that’s 19 out of every 20 of us. Why? Because much of our culture is built around this myth – our body and how we look, is everything!

The Bible, however, reminds us that our body and how we look isn’t everything. When the prophet Samuel was meeting the family of the future King David, God reminded him of this:

But Yahweh said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.

Yahweh does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.’ 1 Samuel 16:7

Our body, and how we look and feel and move, is not everything or even the most important thing in life. In response to that myth, though, many religious people (inc. Christians) respond with the opposite myth:

Myth #2 – Our body is nothing

Some religions, for example, see the physical world including our physical bodies as evil, while the spiritual is good. This idea of was core to a belief called Gnosticism, that grew out of Christianity but was rejected as heresy. Gnostics believed that everything material and physical was evil, including our bodies, and that salvation was about escaping our bodies forever.

Some of the teaching that the apostle Paul battled had these kinds of elements. For example,

They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. 1 Timothy 4:3-4

In other words, marriage and sex and pleasure are all wrong. Enjoying food and drink is wrong. Everything physical and material is wrong. We should just be about spiritual things.

And what can often happen to us, is that because we inhabit both worlds – the secular world that says “my body is everything” and the religious world that says, “my body is nothing” – we can swing between these myths. So sometimes we can get fixated on our bodies and our body image and fitness and the gym and we can go all out. And other times we can ignore our health and what is good for our physical wellbeing because we’re pursuing other, more “spiritual” things.

But the truth is that the Bible presents human beings as physical, material beings, created to inhabit and enjoy a physical, material creation, while also being spiritual creatures made to worship God and relate to others. What the Bible teaches us about our bodies is this:

We are physical beings in physical bodies that need looking after

I love the way UK pastor Sam Allberry, who has spoken at Gracecity before, describes this:

In the Bible, our body is not an accessory to who we are; it is part of who we are. We can’t properly understand who we are apart from our body. Your body is not other than you. It is not just a receptacle for you. It is you. In the Bible it’s not just that you have a body; you are a body.- Sam Allberry

In other words, our bodies are an integral part of our being and our identity and who we are as creatures.

We are not just souls. We are embodied people.

We are physical beings in physical bodies that need looking after

So I want to answer two Q’s this morning:
1). WHY should we care about these physical bodies? How can we develop a biblical understanding of our bodies. And

2). HOW should we care for them?

So let’s think about the WHY first. Let me suggest that the Bible says at least 3 things:

1. We are created as physical beings

When we go back to the story of creation, in Genesis 1 and 2, we find that not only did God make humanity in His image in chapter 1, He made us as physical beings in Genesis 2.

Then Yahweh God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Now Yahweh God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. Genesis 2:7-8

Notice the order of what God does – firstly, he shapes the man’s body from the earth, and then secondly, he breathes life. Humanity was not originally a bodyless soul that was looking for a home, and so God created a physical body for the soul to use for a time. Sometimes I think that’s how we can look at our bodies – these are just the containers for our souls. But we are more than that. We were created as physical creatures – body and soul together – and placed in a physical creation to inhabit and enjoy.

And the Bible speaks very positively about the wonder of our bodies:

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14

Notice what David celebrates in this psalm –

You and I are divinely made – God created each of us and knit us together in the womb.

We are also individually made – notice that David is celebrating that how God made him personally. Each of is a one-of-a-kind creation.

Thirdly, you and I are beautifully made – that’s what David’s celebrating. “Fearfully and wonderfully.” Some of you need to hear that today; struggling with self-image, what see in mirror. Level of self-worth driven more by image-obsessed culture we live in, than what God says in His Word.

We are created as physical beings. But the problem is that death has entered the picture, and one day each of us will die. And if we’re believers in Jesus, our bodies are buried or cremated, but our souls go to be with Jesus. And people can look at that and say, wait a minute, we don’t have bodies in heaven. We’re not embodied people then.

And that’s true, but as I explained in a series last year called “What Happens After I Die?”, that is what theologians call the “intermediate state” – the time between life in this world and eternal life in the new heavens and earth. And as I explained in that series last year, we will enjoy the new heavens and new earth as physical beings in resurrected bodies.

See at the start of the Bible we are created as physical beings, and then at the end,

2. We will be resurrected as physical beings

That’s what we look forward to. Our ultimate hope is the resurrection of our bodies, in which we will inhabit eternity with God. So, Paul writes in Romans 8,

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8:10-11

We are physical people, embodied beings, and our bodies are so important and intrinsic to who we are, the promise of salvation through Jesus is that these bodies will be resurrected and transformed and made incorruptible for eternity.

But in the meantime, between two bookends of creation and eternity, the Bible tells us something else:

3. We are saved and sanctified as physical beings

Coming to faith in Jesus, putting our faith in him, has huge implications of our bodies even in this life. Listen to the apostle Paul’s words to the Corinthians:

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

So at the beginning of the biblical story, we were created as physical beings, both body and soul.

And at the end of the story, we will be resurrected as physical beings to inhabit new heavens and earth. And in the middle of story, if followers of Jesus, we set apart as physical beings, because we are temples of the Holy Spirit – Almighty God lives in us, and we are called to honour Him with our bodies.

We are physical beings in physical bodies that need looking after [big idea; same as slides 7, 9]

That’s the WHY. That’s the reason our physical wellbeing is important for followers of Jesus.

And by the way, our physical wellness has huge implications for our spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

We are not just body and we are not just soul; we are body and soul united in one person… The interconnectivity of the physical and the spiritual means that the health of the body affects the health of the soul and vice versa. David Murray

So HOW do we care for our physical wellbeing as physical beings? Shortly I’m going to be joined by a couple of experts of this, but let me suggest three simple habits of caring for our physical bodies.

David Murray, the pastor and author I just quoted, writes about talking to a Christian psychologist one time about how they dealt with people struggling with anxiety and depression. Psychologist said they began with what called three simple habits in life:

1. Adequate sleep

2. Healthy food

3. Reasonable exercise

This is simply good health 101, isn’t it? We need adequate sleep. Numerous studies have shown that human beings need 7-9 hours of sleep per night to function well. In fact, many top athletes such as Roger Federer, Lebron James, Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, all sleep between 9-12 hours per night.

If you are among those who become nasty, cynical, or even full of doubt when you are missing your sleep, you are morally obligated to try and get the sleep you need… Sometimes the godliest thing you can do in the universe is get a good night’s sleep – not pray all night, but sleep. Donald Carson

Not only need adequate sleep, but healthy food – a good, balanced diet. And doesn’t mean can’t enjoy a special treat every now and then. But on the whole, if we care about these bodies that God cares about, should eating well. Consuming a healthy diet.

1. Adequate sleep

2. Healthy food

3. Reasonable exercise

And thirdly, getting decent exercise. Again, doesn’t mean have join gym, or pump iron an hour a day.

But a vigorous walk or some exercise has huge health benefits for not only bodies, but also minds and emotional health. By way, this has been where owning dog has been awesome. Have border collie named Arlo, and because he’s a sheep dog and needs exercise, Rochelle and I out almost every day, no matter the weather, walking the dog. And great for us!!

We are physical beings in physical bodies that need looking after

Now want to invite two good friends from Gracecity East to join me on stage – Drs Bryn and Bec Thompson. Husband and wife, both medical doctors and former GP’s, now working for Min Health.
