A couple of weeks ago, I was driving to meeting here at Central with a friend, when he asked me about any reflections that I had had after being diagnosed with cancer last Nov. For those who don’t know, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in Nov, had tumour removed in mid-Dec, and am now doing great. No spread of the cancer.
⼏周前，我开⻋和⼀个朋友在这⾥⻅⾯，他问我去年11⽉被诊断出癌症后有什么反映。对于那些不知道的⼈，我想说的是，我在去年11⽉被诊断出肠癌，在12⽉中旬切除了肿瘤，现在情况很好，癌症没有扩散。
I ended up sharing 3 key things with him, but first was my mortality. My cancer reminded me of something I already knew, but was reminded of – I am mortal.
我与他分享了三件关键的事情，⾸先是死亡。癌症提醒了我⼀些我已经知道的事情，它提醒了我，我不过是个凡⼈。
All of us know that we will die someday, but we often live as though we won’t. And the younger you are, the less that death feels real. It can feel very far away. And then we’re shocked by a diagnosis of cancer; get a reminder, like our family friends whose 18-year old daughter ended up at Auckland Hospital on life-support. Turned out to be meningococcal meningitis, most probably from sharing a water bottle. She was in a coma on life support at 18. And thankfully she’s great now, and there seems no long-term repercussions, but it’s a reminder isn’t it?

All of us are mortal. That fact should make us stop, think, What really counts? That’s key question I want us to think about today.
我们所有⼈都是凡⼈。这⼀事实应该让我们停下来、思考，什么才是真正重要的？这是我希望我们今天思考的关键问题。
Slide 1 In the light of death, what really counts in life?

Last week it was Vision Sunday, and JD reminded us that God’s kingdom like yeast – small, insignificant, but packing a huge punch. And Jesus has placed the gospel in our hands to multiply it.
上周是异象主⽇，JD牧师提醒我们，上帝的国度就像酵⺟ - ⼩的、微不⾜道的，但却有巨⼤的影响⼒。耶稣已经把福⾳放在我们的⼿中，让我们把它倍增。
As part of Vision Sunday he shared some different initiatives around being a partnering church / an irresistible church / connected / healthy / multiplying church.

Some are some pretty cool things to be part of this coming year. But in light of that church vision, what’s your vision for this year? What are your resolutions if you make those? What are your goals for this year?

In the light of death, what really counts in life?
在死亡⾯前，⽣命中真正重要的是什么呢？
Can I suggest that maybe this is a good time for a stocktake. Through my high school and uni years, I worked in different clothing stores in the Hutt Valley in Wellington. And every year, both stores had an annual tradition – it was called “stocktake.” We would close the store, and have to count every single garment and item of clothing. As a junior – I generally got stuck with socks, undies, belts and ties – the worst things to count.
也许现在是⼀个‘盘点’的好时机。在我的⾼中和⼤学时代，我在惠灵顿的不同服装店⼯作。每年，商店都有⼀个年度传统，称为 ‘盘点’。我们会关店，清点每⼀件⾐服和物品。作为⼀个年轻⼈，我通常被卡在袜⼦、内裤、⽪带和领带上，这些是最难数的东⻄。
Why? To give an accurate picture for the accountants of how much stock we were holding.

That’s what authors of Ps 49 are inviting us to do. To take a stocktake of life.
Over the summer, we have been blessed with some of our emerging preachers teaching from psalms didn’t they do a great job? And today, as a follow-on to JD’s Vision message last week, I want to look at one more psalm together. Psalm 49.
这就是诗篇49篇的作者邀请我们做的事情。对我们的⽣活进⾏盘点。

Ps 49 is a wisdom psalm. It’s teaching us, much like other wisdom literature in the OT like Proverbs. And the subject of this psalm is death; it’s all about our mortality.
诗篇49篇是⼀⾸智慧诗篇。它在教导我们，就像其他智慧⽂献如箴⾔⼀样。这⾸诗的主题是死亡，关乎我们每个⼈。
There are 3 key moves through; 3 core commands:
诗中有3个关键动作；3个核⼼命令。
LISTEN // REFLECT // UNDERSTAND
听 // 反思 // 明⽩
The opening of the psalm is a call to “Listen”. Look at vv.1-2.
诗篇的开头，是⼀个“听”的呼召，请看第1-2节：
Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who live in this world, both low and high, rich and poor alike. Psalm 49:1-2
万⺠哪！你们要听这话；世上的居⺠哪！你们要留⼼听。
不论地位⾼低，或贫或富，都要⼀同留⼼听。（诗49:1-2）
This is an invitation to everyone to listen up. Doesn’t matter who you are – rich or poor, young or old, man or woman. It doesn’t matter about your ethnicity, age, language, culture.
这是对每个⼈的邀请。你是谁并不重要，⽆论贫富、⽆论年幼、⽆论男⼥，不分种族、年龄、语⾔、⽂化。
The sons of Korah are saying:
可拉⼦孙这样说：
LISTEN – this message applies to everyone (vv.1-4)
听 - 这篇信息关乎所有⼈（1-4节）
Having told people to listen, and in the hope that everyone is now leaning to hear what they have to say, the writers then invite us to REFLECT
在告诉⼈们要倾听之后，希望每个⼈现在都能听他们说的话，然后作者邀请我们反思：
Why should I fear when evil days come,when wicked deceivers surround me –those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? Psalm 49:5-6
在患难的⽇⼦，暗中迫害我的恶⼈围绕我的时候，我何须惧怕呢？他们倚靠财富，⾃夸多财。（诗49:5-6）
The writers are talking about being intimidated by wealthy, powerful people. They are talking about the reality of oppressed that happens all over the world, all the time. But they write, “I’m not afraid.”
Why not? What aren’t they afraid? Look down at vv.10-11:
作者说到被富有的、有权势的⼈所恐吓。他们谈论的正是全世界范围内，⼀直都有发⽣的被压迫的现实。但他们写道："我不惧怕"。为什么不惧怕呢？他们不惧怕什么？请看10-11节：
For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.
Their tombs will remain their housesfor ever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. Psalm 49:10-11
他看⻅智慧⼈死去，愚昧⼈和愚顽⼈⼀同灭亡，把他们的财产留给别⼈。
他们⼼⾥想，他们的家必永存，他们的住处必留到万代；他们以⾃⼰的名，称⾃⼰的地⽅。（诗49:10-11）
So the sons of Korah are saying, LISTEN – this message applies to everyone (vv.1-4) and then,
可拉的⼦孙说，听！这个信息适⽤于每个⼈（第1-4节），然后，
REFLECT – death stalks all of us (vv.5-12)
反思 - 死亡缠扰我们所有⼈（5-12节）
Was Benjamin Franklin who popularized saying, “In this world nothing is certain, except death and taxes”

It’s true isn’t it? Death is a certainty. The current mortality rate for human beings is 100%.
Death stalks all of us; rich, poor; famous, unknown; death comes for us all.
这是真的，不是吗？死亡是肯定的，⽬前⼈类的死亡率是100%。
死亡缠扰着我们所有⼈，富⼈、穷⼈、名⼈、⽆名之辈，死亡会降临到我们每个⼈身上。
Bye the way, I love the comment at the end of v.11:

Their tombs will remain their housesfor ever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. Psalm 49:11
他们⼼⾥想，他们的家必永存，他们的住处必留到万代；他们以⾃⼰的名，称⾃⼰的地⽅。（诗49:10-11）
When we first moved out to East Auckland, to the Botany area, we came across a lovely reserve rightacross the road from Botany Town Centre.
当我们第⼀次搬到奥克兰东部Botany地区时，我们发现了⼀个美丽的保护区，就在Botany镇中⼼的对⾯。
And to out surprise we discovered that this lovely park area with a pond and walks was called, Logan Carr Reserve. Now Logan is the name of our middle son, who at that point was a 2 year old who hadn’t done too much in the world just yet. But we still stoked to have a whole reserve named after him.
我们惊讶地发现，这个有池塘和散步的公园地区被称为洛根-卡尔保护区。洛根是我们⼀个⼉⼦的名字，当时他还是个2岁的孩⼦，在这个世界上还没有做太多的事情。但我们仍然为有⼀个以他名字命名的保护区感到兴奋。
But of course it wasn’t named after him, but a local councillor from the Manukau are had spent some decades serving local government. But he died in 2019. And now, I don’t know anyone in East Auckland who even knows who that Logan Carr was. If I walked around Botany Town Centre, just across the rod, and talked to 100 people, I have a better chance of finding someone who knows our Logan rather than this gentleman who is no longer with us.
当然，公园不是以我⼉⼦的名字命名的，⽽是⼀位来⾃⻢努考区的当地议员，他花了⼏⼗年时间为当地政府服务，他于2019年去世了。现在，我不知道在奥克兰东区有多少⼈知道Logan Carr是谁。如果我在Botany镇中⼼⾛⼀圈，和100个⼈交谈，可能会有⼈认识我⼉⼦洛根，⽽不认识已经过世的洛根-卡尔先⽣。
And that’s not being disrespectful to the late Logan Carr – it’s simply showing the truth of what the sons of Korah are saying. Death comes for all of us, and even if some land is named after us, we’re still gone and very soon, forgotten.
这并不是对已故的洛根-卡尔先⽣不敬，这只是表明可拉⼦孙所说的事实。死亡降临到我们所有⼈身上，即使⼀些⼟地是以我们的名字命名，我们还是会离开，⽽且很快就会被遗忘。
I love the way Eugene Peterson rendered these verses in the Message:

Anyone can see that the brightest and best die,
wiped out right along with fools and idiots.
They leave all their prowess behind,
move into their new home, The Coffin,

So the psalms says, LISTEN – this for all of us // REFLECT – we’re all going die

This section of the psalm ends in v.12 with a refrain, a chorus, that is similar; virtually repeated in v.20.
诗篇的这⼀部分在第12节结束，接着是副歌。
We aren’t immortal. We don’t last long.
Like our dogs, we age and weaken. And die. Psalm 49:12 (The Message)
我们不是不死之身，我们不会⻓享富贵。
如同我们的宠物狗⼀样，我们会衰⽼和衰弱，接着死亡。（12节，信息本圣经）
So, in light of our mortality, how should live? The last section of the psalm tells us:
那么，鉴于死亡的事实，我们应该如何⽣活？诗篇的最后⼀部分告诉我们：
This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.
They are like sheep and are destined to die;
death will be their shepherd
(but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
far from their princely mansions.
But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
he will surely take me to himself. Psalm 49:13-15
这就是愚昧⼈的道路；但在他们以后的⼈，还欣赏他们的话。
他们好像⽺群被派定下阴间；死亡必作他们的牧⼈。到了早晨，正直⼈要管辖他们；他们的形体
必被阴间消灭，他们再没有住处。

LISTEN – this for all of us // REFLECT – we’re all going die
And then the third part of the palms is saying:
听 - 这篇信息关乎所有⼈！反省 - ⼈⼈都有⼀死！
接着第三部分，诗篇说到：
UNDERSTAND – only a life with God matters (vv.13-20)
明⽩ - 唯有与上帝同在的⽣活才是最重要的（13-20节）
There is a stunning contrast here between those trust in themselves vs. those who trust in God
If you trust in self – you will be shepherded by death; you will end decaying in grave
But if you trust in God – you’re shepherded by Him; and you will be redeemed from the dead
这⾥有⼀个惊⼈的对⽐，就是那些信靠⾃⼰的⼈与信靠上帝的⼈之间的对⽐。
如果你信靠⾃⼰，你将被死亡所辖制，你将在坟墓⾥以腐烂结束。
但如果你信靠上帝，你会被上帝所牧养，你会从死亡中得到救赎。
The idea of being redeemed or ransomed – which means to be purchased or bought out of slavery – ithas come up before in psalm (Read 49:7-8, then 15) Promise of life
被救赎或被赎回的概念，意味着从奴役中被买赎出来，这在诗篇中曾经出现过（7-8节，然后是15节）。⽣命的应许：
No one can redeem the life of anotheror give to God a ransom for them –the ransom for a life is costly,b no payment is ever enough. Psalm 49:7-8

In other words, no one on this planet – not even the richest in the world – can pay enough of a ransom to hold back death. No human being can redeem and save us from the grave.
换句话说，这个世上没有⼈，即使是世界上最富有的⼈，能够⽀付⾜够的赎⾦来阻⽌死亡。没有⼈能够赎回和拯救我们脱离坟墓。
But look at v.15 again.
请看15节：
But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
he will surely take me to himself. Psalm 49:15
但 神必救赎我的灵魂脱离阴间的权势，因为他必把我接去。（诗49:15）
See, there’s the promise of life. No human being can save themselves or save others from death.
But God can. He has the power to redeem – to save us even from death itself.
这就是⽣命的应许。没有⼈能够拯救⾃⼰或拯救他⼈脱离死亡。
但上帝可以，祂有能⼒救赎，甚⾄从死亡本身拯救我们。
So what is this psalm saying to us?
那么，这篇诗篇对我们意味着什么？
LISTEN – this message applies to everyone (vv.1-4)
REFLECT – death stalks all of us (vv.5-12)
UNDERSTAND – only a life with God matters (vv.13-20)
听 - 这篇信息关乎所有⼈（1-4节）
反思 - 死亡缠扰我们所有⼈（5-12节）
明⽩ - 唯有与上帝同在的⽣活才是最重要的（13-20节）
This is the big idea of this psalm.
这就是整篇诗篇的含义。
Live a life that counts
in light of the countdown
过有意义的⽣活
在倒计时的情况下
What do I mean by the “countdown”? I simply mean that the clock is ticking. The day is coming. We’re allgoing to die – that’s a certainty. And while we don’t when, it’s coming.
"倒计时 "是什么？我的意思很简单，就是时间在流逝。这⼀天即将到来，我们都会死，这是⼀个确定的事实。虽然我们不知道什么时候，但它正在到来。
In Rochelle’s family, there’s an infamous story about her brother Mark. Was about intermediate school age, and came out one school morning to kitchen feeling a bit crook. “Not feeling very well.” And his mum Elaine, my mother-in-law – whose lovely by the way – she says, “we’re all slowly dying”
在罗谢尔的家⾥，有⼀个关于她弟弟⻢克的故事。⼤约是中学⽣时代，在⼀个清晨，⻢克来到厨房，说到，"感觉不是很好。" 他的妈妈伊莱恩，我那可爱的岳⺟回应，"我们都在慢慢死去。"
And you know, that’s good theology. That’s exactly what the sons of Korah want us to understand. We’re all slowly dying. The clock is ticking. The countdown is on.

On the wall behind you, those of you live today at Central, is screen. When band is up here, the words of the songs are projected there for them to sing. But when preaching starts, a clock appears, and the countdown starts. You guys don’t see that – but the preacher does.
在你们身后的墙上（中区教堂），相当于幕板。当敬拜队在这⾥带领敬拜的时候，歌曲的歌词会投射在墙上让他们看到。但当讲道开始时，会出现⼀个时钟，倒计时开始。你们看不到这些，但讲道的⼈能看到。
It’s the same in life; all of us have a countdown. But we can’t see it; it’s out of sight. We don’t know whatn the clock says; we don’t know how much time we have – 40 years; 14 years; 4 months. But it’s counting down none the less. And because we’re mortal, there’s a countdown.
这在⽣活中是⼀样的，我们所有⼈都有⼀个倒计时。但我们看不到它，它在视线之外。我们不知道时钟上⾯标的是什么，我们不知道我们有多少时间，也许40年、14年、4个⽉？但它正在倒计时。我们都是凡⼈，所以有⼀个倒计时。
Live a life that counts
in light of the countdown
过有意义的⽣活
在倒计时的情况下
So how do you do that? How do we live in light of our mortality, and death, and this countdown.
Let me suggest two things as we finish:
那么我们该如何做呢？我们如何⾯对死亡、以及这个倒计时中⽣活？
在讲道即将结束时，让我建议两件事：
1. Trust in God
1. 信靠上帝
Trust in God. Put your faith in the only one who has defeated death, and that’s Jesus – God himself who
became a man. When Jesus was faced with the death of his close friend, Lazarus, he said.
信靠上帝！把信⼼放在唯⼀战胜了死亡的⼈身上，那就是耶稣，耶稣道成⾁身来到世上。当耶稣
⾯对他的朋友拉撒路的死亡时，祂说到：
Slide 20 I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and
whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? John 11:25-26
“我就是复活和⽣命；信我的⼈，虽然死了，也要活着。所有活着⼜信我的⼈，必定永远不死，
你信这话吗？”（约11:25-26）
When you stop and look at those words, that’s an outlandish claim. Love what one of my favourite
authors right now, Rebecca McLaughlin, says about this:
当你停下来看看这段话，会觉得是⼀个离谱的说法。我很喜欢的作家之⼀，丽⻉卡-⻨克劳林，这样评价：
Slide 21 This is one of those moments in the Gospels where the idea that Jesus is just a good teacher gets
smashed on the ground like a piece of cheap pottery. Good teachers do not claim to be the
resurrection and the life, the source of life itself ... But that’s what Jesus claims. In this moment with
Martha, Jesus claims that faith in Him can conquer death itself. Rebecca McLaughlin
这是福⾳书中的⼀个时刻，耶稣只是⼀位好⽼师的想法像⼀块廉价的陶器⼀样被砸在地上。好⽼

Jesus said that he came to do exactly what Ps 49 said – to give his life as a ransom for us. He paid penalty
of our sin when he died on cross. And he conquered death when he rose from dead. And he Invites us to
put our faith in Him.
耶稣所做的，正是诗篇49篇所说的事，以祂的⽣命为我们做赎价。当祂死在⼗字架上时，祂为我
们的罪付出了代价。当祂从死⾥复活时，祂战胜了死亡。祂邀请我们信靠祂。
If you’ve never done that, you can that right now, within your own heart. You can just choose to trust
Jesus with your life. And if you’re online, we have a team of hosts who would love to chat with you about

The other way we can live a life that counts in light of the countdown, is to live for God.
在倒计时的情况下，我们能够过上有意义的⽣活，就是为上帝⽽活。

Live a life that counts in light of the countdown. That’s where the sons of Korah, the authors of Ps 49,
are going in this psalm. “Don’t be envious of the rich and powerful. Don’t think that that’s what life is all
about; where satisfaction found. Make your life count eternally.”
在倒计时的情况下，过有意义的⽣活。这就是可拉的⼦孙，也就是诗篇49篇的作者，在这篇诗篇
中所说的：“不要羡慕有钱有势的⼈，不要以为那就是⽣活的全部，是满⾜感的所在。要让你的⽣
命在永恒中有价值。”
Listen to some of the final words of this psalm in the Message:
看看信息本圣经对这⼏节经⽂的翻译：
So don’t be impressed with those who get rich and pile up fame and fortune.
They can’t take it with them; fame and fortune all get left behind.
Just when they think they’ve arrived and folks praise them because they’ve made good,
They enter the family burial plot where they’ll never see sunshine again. Psalm 49:16-19 (The Message)
因此，不要对那些富有和堆积名利的⼈印象深刻。
他们带不⾛这些的；名利都会被抛下。

That isn’t life, the psalmists are saying. Life is not about wealth and fame and power.
诗篇作者说，那不是⽣活，⽣活不是关乎财富、名声和权⼒。
Jesus made the same point in a story about a rich businessman. He was already wealthy, but he saw an
opportunity. He invested well for the future; he diversified. And he made an absolute killing. He was
suddenly wealthy beyond measure.
耶稣在⼀个关于富⼈的故事中提出了同样的观点。这个⼈已经很富有了，但他看到了⼀个机会，
他为未来进⾏了良好的投资，他进⾏了多元化投资，结果他赚了个盆满钵满，变得富可敌国。
But as Jesus tells the story, that very night, as he kicks back to celebrate, Jesus says:

But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get
what you have prepared for yourself?” Luke 12:20
神却对他说：‘⽆知的⼈哪，今天晚上，你拥有的就要取去你的灵魂，你所预备的要归给谁呢？路12:20）
See, the businessman in the story failed to live a life that counted in light of the countdown. He ignored the countdown. Lived as though it wasn’t real. And he lived with the consequences.
看，故事中的富⼈没有按着倒计时过⼀个有意义的⽣活。他⽆视倒计时，活得好像它并不存在，他的⽣活也因此受到了影响。
So trust in God, and live for God.
要信靠上帝，为上帝⽽活。
So as we finish, I want to come back to the vision that JD shared last week. There’s some exciting stuff
