Sometimes when we glance back, we can ask: are the best days past, or are the best days ahead?
That question doesn't just come up in the process of transitioning to new stages of life.
It can come up as we think about church.
A lot has changed in the past 5 years.
There are a lot of cultural challenges the Church in NZ is now facing that weren’t there 5 years ago, at least to the same degree.
This past week, our staff across Gracecity got together (PHOTO). (BTW – no, they don’t tend to keep their hands on their heads!)
I asked them to write a word that for them would capture the mood of the Church in NZ.
We had 40 sticky notes. 36 of those notes highlighted the challenges. (PHOTO). The key themes were:
· Tepid
· Cautious
· Fatigued
· Time of rebuilding
It’s understandable.
· The pandemic, series of lockdowns, one of them - a string of 7 ½ months without one in-person services
· Some church leaders across our nation are struggling with mental health and energy. Some have bowed out of ministry.
· There’s financial pressures
· Tribalism
· Distraction
· Navigating a world that has changed faster than we have deepened
· Culturally, a lot of assumptions have changed around sexuality and gender.
· Increasingly young adults are leaving faith
· Other generations might hold onto to their faith but increasingly disengaged from a faith community.
· The church is increasingly seen as the bad people, not the good people.
It would be easy to make that assumption that the glory days of the church in NZ is all in the past.
When you heard that today is ‘Vision Sunday’ you might have rolled your eyes cause you’re trying to cope with the challenges of the present time.
It’s hard to get excited about vision and movement when we are facing so many challenges.
Sure, I can get up and spout forth our mission. “We’re called to join God’s renewal of people and places”
That’s big and grand. But, you might be thinking: “actually, our culture is too far gone. The glory days are behind us. Let’s protect what we have, protect what remains, focus on what is.”
But Jesus has a very different perspective.
Jesus said, “I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”/ Matthew 16:18
Do you hear what he is saying?
Do you believe what Jesus is saying?
“I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”/ Matthew 16:18
This is a big statement.
What Jesus says is not dependent on who is or who isn’t in political office.
It’s not conditional on culture having warm fuzzies about Jesus or the church.
It’s not based on needing the best or right circumstances.
After all, Jesus says that even the powers of hell – in other words - - the worst possible thing imaginable will cannot conquer the church that Jesus will build.
When Jesus said these words, Rome was in charge. Rome was hostile to the ways of Jesus. You could take every trait Jesus spoke about and you would see the opposite paraded in the Roman Empire.
Despite the challenge then – and today – there is this constant promise “I will build my church.” “I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”
What we need most right now is an increasing confidence in Jesus and his good news – what we call ‘the gospel.’
This power of the gospel is often seen when the challenges are at their greatest.
This light of the gospel is seen best when the world is at its darkest.
We need to realise that the success of a healthy growing church is never about methods and personalities and structures and techniques.
What we need most is the belief that the gospel has the power to change everything. It’s a message full of hope for every and any season.
I realise many are giving up on church. But, Jesus doesn’t. Despite all its failings in the past 2000 years, and even 20 years–He is still building it and making all things new through it. He promises to do so.
Yes, the church is still full of imperfect people. Yet, the church is still glorious, beautiful and intriguing. If you are a follower of Jesus, that church includes you and me. We are the very people Jesus chooses to accomplish this big mission be places into our very hands.
Some of you might be a bit cynical and wonder if I have a hidden agenda in our Vision Service today. That I want to trick you into giving your life to this, or jumping into this. But, it’s not a hidden agenda. I want to be upfront. Yes, I want you to give your life to the way of Jesus. Why wouldn’t you? He says this is where we find fullness of life.
Jesus loved to use illustrations to get his point across. When it came to illustrating the gospel of His kingdom, he illustrated it in many ways.
He said: It’s like a farmer sowing seed, a man hunting treasure, fishermen casting a net, a person forgiven a debt, a wedding guest who forgot his jacket, a landowner being generous. The kingdom is like seed, yeast, pearl, fish, a banquet, a vineyard. It's so many different things, it's hard to say it's any one thing.
It's seemingly random. It's hidden. It's surprising. It's disruptive. It's unexpected. It's something you desperately need or passionately want, but it comes mixed with things that you will find, at times, distasteful or disruptive. It's something you receive and cultivate. It's something you seek and lay hold of. It's something you await and stay ready for. It's something you're invited to and come prepared for. It's something of great value and need to discover. It's something that reverses values and expectations, and turns everything upside down. It’s something that multiplies.
The illustration that has most captured my imagination of late is one of bread-making. Jesus said:
“God’s kingdom is like yeast that a woman works into the dough for dozens of loaves of barley bread—and waits while the dough rises.” // Words of Jesus from Matthew 13:33 (MSG)
As you can see, we have our bakers here today - Aureziel (ow-ee) and Samuel (son) Visitacion.
Samuel
They are baking some pizza (and cinnamon scrolls?) to go into our pizza oven.
Here is some yeast.
Can you even see the little yeast I am holding up right now? Even if the camera zoomed in right now – you might be able to squint and just see it. Maybe!
It’s disappointingly small.
That’s how I feel a lot of the time.
I’m sure you can relate. In fact, you might look at the pastor at the front trying to navigate through the challenges and changes – and whisper to the person you are with: ‘well, he doesn’t look all that impressive.’
Then, you look around the church – yes, some significant people… but generally most people here … ‘well, they’re underwhelming.”
Then, you consider yourself… Most of you feel insecure. You feel scared about talking to others about Jesus. You’re fatigued or confused at times. You feel the pressure from wider culture.
How is it possible for us to be part of something so grand and big so that we would say -- joining God’s renewal of people and places. ??
How is it possible that Jesus wants to build His church here in NZ, here in Auckland, and here among us and with us?
But, our confidence is never meant to be in some person or leader or technique.
When people place their focus on a leader or some technique or some building, we lose our confidence and give up. Sadly, that’s what many Christians and churches are doing throughout our nation.
Our confidence is in Jesus and the good news of the gospel.
And Jesus says that gospel is like yeast that is worked into the dough which leads to dozens of loaves of barley bread.
At the time Jesus was preaching, he and his ragtag community had much in common with that small and insignificant yeast. They weren’t respected. They had no power, little influence, scanty resources.
Not that dissimilar to today.
On top of that - Rome was on the move mandating this and mandating that.
Even Jesus didn’t look all that impressive. He looked nothing like a king.
His so-called kingdom looked nothing like the powerful kingdom of Rome.
Small grains of yeast!
…But looks are deceiving.
From complete obscurity, Jesus came to public attention for just three or so years. Yet today, every time we glance at a calendar or write out the date, we are reminded that chronologically at least, this incredibly brief life somehow became the dividing line of history between BC and AD. You might be connecting today and don't yet Jesus – but you can’t deny the incredible difference he made in such a small amount of time. This is the yeast of the gospel.
But, then Jesus left his followers in charge. He left them with a big mission. He said to them:
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father” // Words of Jesus from John 14:12
If you were me, I would have looked around the room and gone. Really? Through us. And ‘greater works’? What could be better than what Jesus did? Surely, our best days can’t be ahead?
But, Jesus knew that they were going to be involved in a movement that would grow and expand and not be restricted to any one place; That they would see the yeast of the gospel work among ordinary people in ordinary ways.
And that’s what happened.
We have some yeast that has been growing for 10 minutes or so. This is what yeast does.
In the same way, in just 30 years, the yeast of the gospel – like yeast - multiplied throughout the known world of the time. And it wasn’t through violence – it was through love. It wasn’t through coercion – it was through simple conversations and service. It wasn’t through impressive looking people – it was primarily about ordinary people going about their normal lives with one radical difference: They were following the way of Jesus. They lived the values of a different kingdom. They obeyed what Jesus had to say about where life and happiness was found. They talked about Jesus – courageously letting people know the difference Jesus made in their lives.
The yeast of the kingdom grew and it grew. Leaders were raised up. Churches were planted. And in just 30 years, the gospel multiplied throughout the known world of the time. And continues to grow and transform people today.
Jesus is building his church.
If you feel small and ordinary and unimpressive – then you are the very person Jesus wants. Jesus places the yeast of the gospel into your hand to bake something good.
Already/soon, the smell of pizza will begin to make us hungry. There is something appetizing. Appealing. Irresistible.
That’s what is meant to happen through the way we live our lives. We draw attention and appeal to Jesus.
The power is not in you or me. It’s in the yeast of the gospel.
Rather than look at our world and go ‘oh no.’ We get to look at our world and go ‘okay, Jesus. Here I am. I’ll take the yeast of the gospel. I’ll share it. I'll bake. I want to be used to give people the bread of life. I want to live my life in such a way that there is something compelling, attractive, tasty!
Some churches will respond to the challenges by retreating. Some people will throw those hands in the air and give up. Some will try to go back to techniques they used before in the hope of different responses.
Jesus says, our confidence is in Him and in this message we call the gospel.
If you had to sum up our vision for the year ahead,
it is reimagining the gospel of God in the hands of ordinary people. Realising that Jesus places the yeast of his gospel into your hand to bake something good.
It's not about becoming big or large. It’s not actually about Gracecity at all. But it is about empowering and equipping for a movement of mission where every child, teenager, woman and man who calls Gracecity their home – holds out their hand, embraces the gospel with a confident hope, and allows it to multiply something good in their lives and through their lives. To see people come to know Jesus and love Jesus and join what He is doing in the world to make all things new.
Yes, this yeast looks small and unimpressive. But, as it grows -- it produces something that satisfies. It fills. It nourishes. It gives life.

Later this year, NZ is hosting the FIFA women’s football world cup. We will see international teams all around our country. The Argentinian team will be basing themselves down the road in Ellerslie.
It got me thinking about soccer: Did you realize that soccer is the number one sport throughout the world … by a long way?
Why is that?
Cause to be honest …
· It’s not a high scoring game like American football. Typically soccer has a score like 2-0.
· Neither is it the most sensational game to watch. Yes, there are some Hollywood moments and dramatics when a player falls down and pretends there is a terrible injustice - but it’s pretty simple.
The reason it’s the number one sport is simply this: everyone, anywhere, can play.
· The rules are simple for anyone and everyone to understand you have 90 minutes to make the ball go into the opponent’s goal as many times as you can, and you aren’t allowed to use your hands.
· Scoring is simple: a goal is worth one point, and the one with more goals wins. Even a 3-year-old can understand that.
· The equipment to play might come from anything around you. Goals might be marked out of shoes or rocks. If you don’t have a proper ball - you can find a can or plastic bottle laying on the side of the street. In fact, people who can’t afford to buy a soccer ball made them from plastic bags and string
· You don’t need to be tall (like a basketball player) or strong (like a rugby player). One of the best players in the world, Lionel Messi, is less than 5.6 feet tall.
· You don’t need to be a professional player.
All you need is to be on the field – engaged.
Friends, isn’t this the way the early church grew? Everybody played – wherever they were and whatever they were doing. It’s at the heart of our Gracecity value that we call participation.
One of the problems of the NZ church is that somehow church became an elite sport. Many of us became consumers of church – being entertained from upfront, relying on the professional pastors to do the evangelism and cause something to happen.
It’s time to reimagine the gospel that has been placed into the hands of ordinary people.
It’s time to invite everybody, anywhere to play.
Remember the disciples were unskilled ordinary men. But people could tell they had been with Jesus.
There was a power to what they did that didn’t come from their natural selves. It came from the yeast of the gospel that was placed in their hands, and the empowerment of the Spirit of God.
It’s time to reimagine the power of that gospel – that can accomplish so much transformation in every area of life, every sector of society, every age group, every ethnicity, and every challenge.
In a moment I want to share some specific initiatives for the year ahead.
But, ultimately it’s about you and me choosing to place our confident hope in the good news of Jesus.
Because Jesus places the yeast of the gospel into your hand to bake something good.
At the end of the aisles, are some booklets highlighting areas of focus for the year ahead.
· Pass them down
· Pass pens
I want to highlight that we still need to work out a lot of things around each of these. We’re continuing to pray and seek God around timing and details… But, hopefully this provides some vision of what we’re focusing in on over the course of the year ahead, all designed to equip and empower you.
I don’t think any of this is radical. It’s simply reflects the health and growth we see in the NT church as they too responded to similar challenges we face today, and equipped and empowered people to follow Jesus.
As I’m talking through this, there might be something that resonates in a particular way…
· Take note of it.
· On the back are some next steps you can take…
There are five areas we’re putting greater focus on:
#1 A partnering church that ignites a movement of prayer, discipleship, and church planting across our city.
We’re all about the name of Jesus being heard across our city and believe it takes all sorts of churches working together to better express God’s love in action and showcase the power of God.
In late 2019, the church leaders of Auckland asked me to chair our group of denominational leaders, bishops, and pastors of our cities largest churches. It’s a huge honour. The Spirit of God is blowing his favour upon us in the way pastors are connecting together in significant ways and dreaming about what we can better do together.
This week we launched our website – https://www.aucklandchurchnetwork.nz/
· A key focus for us this year is on connecting pastors together in ethnic and geographic groups around our city.
· We’re also bringing pastoral leaders together to champion planting across NZ. At the end of this month, I’ll be taking 10 leaders from different denominations across our city to the biggest global church planting conference held this year in USA. The whole purpose is for us to prayerfully discern what this looks like for all of us in NZ.
· We’re also keen to raise awareness of the diversity that exists in the 1000+ churches across our city. One of the ways we do that is through a 2 minute video devotion called The Daily. It’s a partnership we have developed with Shine TV and Radio Rhema. It starts 22nd February and goes through to Easter Sunday, a 2 minute video for each day of the Lent season.
· You can subscribe to that right now by heading to aucklandchurchnetwork.nz.
· 你现在就可以登录aucklandchurchnetwork.nz知道我们的节目。
# 2 An irresistible church where we regularly talk to people about the good news of Jesus.
We want people to come to know Jesus.
That happens through you and me casually talking about Jesus at every opportunity.
It can happen with your friends or colleagues tomorrow. When someone asks what you did over the weekend, ‘I did a few jobs around home… went to church on Sunday …’ ‘What church?’ ‘Gracecity… I love my church – made up of people from over 55 countries – all learning about what Jesus is able to do through ordinary imperfect people like me.’
Just saying someone like that sparks intrigue.
A friend reconnected with me through facebook earlier this month. I mentioned Gracecity on passing. Before I knew it, he is watching our services on youtube along with his family members. Purely out of curiosity. At this stage, he doesn't know Jesus. But, that conversation sparked intrigue.
If you’re here in person today, on your seat is a little card

Think of these as your business card. Our staff don’t have their own business cards. Instead, we believe all of us do.
After all, all of us are on the mission team, discipleship team, prayer team, hospitality team, Alpha team, hosting team, and whatever other team you want to be part of. Bottom line - We're on mission together. We’re all players, not spectators.
These cards are designed for you to take and pass on to others. Grab as many as you want.
The whole idea is when you meet someone who struggling with debt – you can talk about Christians Against Poverty.

Or, nourish or mainly music – our groups for young parents with babies and preschoolers.
There are so many ministries in our church doing great things. Over the coming weeks, we want to profile these better in order for you to know how to connect people.
We also have three new outreach initiatives to highlight this year:
· In July this year, we celebrate 25 years of Alpha

#4 A healthy church with people increasingly following the way of Jesus
For too long, we have separated faith from work, faith from home, and faith from the rest of life.
Jesus didn’t call us simply to believe in him. He calls us to follow him – in all of life.
We want to help you grow in the following of Jesus.

· Big Step Sunday for children and their parents - this is an opportunity for parents to be with their children in a clear presentation of the gospel message and an opt for children to respond with their parents.

· Gracecity College begins and launches a foundational gap year in February 2024

o We recognize that there is a crisis of Christian leadership across our country. The pool of pastors is diminishing year after year.

o We want to do our part in raising and forming pastoral leaders for the future.

o While this might be called ‘Gracecity college’ it is partnership with existing theological colleges in our city – but ensuring we can make learning more accessible for you.
o We had a director for our college ready to start this term but due to family reasons, he has had to pull out. We’ll look at what we do later in the year.
#5 A multiplying church with new services and locations
The gospel is meant to grow people. It’s something that grows and multiplies.
“In an effort to reach more people and respond to our city’s increasing population, urban spread and changing schedules, we seek to multiply our services and locations.”
· Churches are becoming internally focused and concerned to be visionary.
· Pastors of small-to-medium are struggling with expectations of their congregations, largely disconnected, and prone to burn out.
· There needs to be a new approach that provides the benefit of large with the feel of relationship and connection.
· Additionally, research shows us that new plants are the most successful way of reaching new people that don’t know Jesus. Yet, there are so few plants.
· Auckland is still projected to grow with projected 300,000 by 2030.

· Develop our Hybrid Strategy with online and in-person options

· Relaunch Night Church with 75 people actively serving/attending
o Night church was a casuality of COVID. 7 ½ months without services led to night church finishing last year, until we were able to relaunch.
o It's time to relaunch. After all, Sunday mornings don’t work for everyone, and young young adults and students thrive in a focused place.
o We don’t have a finalized date yet but we will launch when we have all ministry leaders in place.

o You might go – don’t we have enough churches already in Auckland? The answer is no. Our city is expanding.
o Are we trying to be some mega church? Even that phrase is all relative – but, no, we’re not wanting to build an empire. But, we are following the pattern in the NT about allowing the gospel to reproduce disciples who reproduce disciples, churches that reproduce churches.
o Shouldn’t we work to help struggling churches? The answer is yes. And we are – through ACN.
o Research shows that the best way to reach people is to plant churches.

▪ 80% of the people in a new church plant are typically people new to faith. Our heart is to see people come to know Jesus.
▪ We don’t have details… Want to continue to pray and prepare and continue to trusting what we believe is the prompting of the Spirit so far – so we will continue to ….
▪ We have Tim Palmer beginning with us at the end of this month who will begin a residency programme training leaders and a launch team with the hope of planting in two years time.
▪ Tim Palmer
▪ This won’t get everyone jazzed. Eg when a group grows, no one wants someone to leave to begin something new. People are connected and like what is. But we do it for the sake of new people.
▪ We want to plant in order to better provide the opportunity for people we have not yet connected with to come to know Jesus.

The yeast of the kingdom grew and it grew. And in just 30 years, the gospel spread throughout the known world of the time.
The irony is that Rome itself went from trying to stamp out Christianity to publicly endorsing it!
And here we are 2000 years later with the gospel in the hands of ordinary people – ready for this great work of God.

Today, is about committing ourselves to His mission and to open up our lives to His Spirit.
If your new to church, that might sound weird. The Holy Spirit is God – and He indwells those who believe and empowers them to accomplish the mission.
I encourage you to pray…
Help me know what it looks like to be all in with what you are doing
I want my life to be about what really matters
