How do you feel about that comment: “Jesus let his hair down, too” ? Have you ever thought about the way Jesus enjoyed life to the full?
There are a lot of paintings in galleries that show him with a serious or stoic look. Or in pain. Or, that empathetic look of compassion.
I can see why that would be. The Bible tells us: “He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.”/ Isaiah 53:3
And, of course, the shortest verse in the Bible is: “Jesus wept.”/ John 11:35
As we’ve seen in these past couple of weeks – he gets us in our sadness. He gets us in our disappointments. He too experienced extreme lows.
But, this doesn’t mean Jesus never had occasions to laugh with his friends. If we focused just on the lows, we would miss out on the highs we know that Jesus also experienced.
How many of you like to have fun?
I want to raise my hand too. But, sometimes I actually feel a little guilty about having fun. It feels like I’m wasting my time. Should I really be enjoying that novel and a coffee out on the deck or watching that game of cricket - when I could be working on something that matters? Isn’t work more valuable than play?
But then I came across this quote from my favourite author – C S Lewis – who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia. He said: “Joy is the serious business of heaven” / C. S. Lewis (picture of Lewis with quote for full slide)
I want us to take a few minutes for us to see some of the incidents in Jesus life that show us that He Gets Us in our laughter and joy.
To do that, I thought it most appropriate to have a party game – Pass the Parcel.
I imagine we all remember how to play this. But, if you don’t, when the music plays .. you ‘pass the parcel’. You move it to the person next to you. Quickly. When the music stops – you keep the parcel where it is. If that is in on your lap, you unwrap a layer.
There are a few layers. Each layer has a verse that needs to be read to us.
So, let the music roll.. (music)
#1 [Jesus’ birth was surrounded by joy]
If I can have one of you read the card that says ‘Verse 1’
“An angel of the Lord appeared to [the Shepherds]. And the glory of the Lord shone around them.
They were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news. It will bringgreat joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord.”/ Luke 2:8-11 NIRV
Did you see how the birth of Jesus was surrounded by joy?
It’s not uncommon to see smiles in the birth unit at the hospital or at Birth Care.
A new baby causes us to smile. The joy here though was not just the standard joy of a new-born baby
– but this baby also brought good news for all people. He is the One able to turn things around. No wonder we sing about the “thrill of hope.”
If I can have one of you read the card that says ‘Verse 2’
“When [the Magi] saw the star, they were filled with joy! They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.” / Matthew 2:10-11 (NLT)
It wasn’t just a Shepherds who get joy. It’s the Magi.
These Magi had little idea about God or the promised Messiah. But, they knew that something special was happening. They travelled a long way – possibly a 6 month one-way trip to get to this point!
When they meet Jesus, they could hardly contain themselves with joy!
We know Jesus gets us in our laughter – because Jesus’ birth was surrounded by joy
So… onto the next layer of Pass the Parcel/ let the music roll…
#2 [Jesus celebrated holidays and feasts with his family and friends]
[blue card]
If someone can read ‘Verse 3’
“You must also blow the trumpets when you are happy. Blow them at your appointed feasts. Blow them at your New Moon feasts. Blow them when you sacrifice your burnt offerings. Blow them when you sacrifice your friendship offerings. They will remind me of you. I am the LORD your God.”/ Numbers 10:10 (NIRV)
This verse is about celebrating the various feasts/festivals that God set up. There were at least seven of them. Often we forget that God is the One who began these festivals. In other words, God commanded His people to get together and celebrate!
So, they would stop their work. They would rest. And most importantly – they would celebrate! These times included laughter, fun and even dancing!
Because Jesus was Jewish and was obedient to the law, guess what? Jesus stopped work.
Jesus relaxed.
Jesus took time to celebrate and laugh and dance.
We know Jesus gets us in our laughter – because Jesus celebrated holidays and feasts with his family and friends.
--
So… onto the next layer of Pass the Parcel/ let the music roll…
#3 [Jesus had a reputation for having a good time]
If someone can read ‘Verse 4’
“John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a boozer, a friend of the misfits. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”/ Words of Jesus, from Matthew 11:19 (MSG)
Jesus shared lively meals with his friends. He drank with them. He had so much fun and acted so freely around the dinner table, some people called him a glutton and a boozer.
One scholar of Luke’s gospel says: “In Luke’s Gospel Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.” / Tim Chester.
This is why he got a reputation. He never indulged too freely.
But, he was always uninhibited in his pursuit of compassion and joy for others.
We know Jesus gets us in our laughter – because Jesus had a reputation for having a good time.
--
So… onto the next layer of Pass the Parcel/ let the music roll…
#4 [Jesus turns water into wine]
[yellow card]
If someone can read ‘Verse 5’
There was a wedding. … Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to Jesus, “They have no more wine.”/ John 2:1-3 (NIRV)
Jesus was invited to a wedding party. Some might think that inviting Jesus to a party might be like
having the fun police arrive to throw cold water on a party. But, you would be wrong: Jesus actually rescues the party.
There is a problem: the wine runs out.
You say, ‘why don’t they just pop down to the local store and load up with more.’ But, at this time, there wasn’t a store you just popped into. And, it may be that the groom can’t pay more than he
already has.
Others of you are thinking: ‘it’s not a big deal. Just give them something else to drink. I mean, I didn’t have wine at my wedding – so what’s the big deal. ‘But, this WAS a big deal back then. All takes place in an honour and shame culture. This is about to be a social / psychological catastrophe! Not a great way to begin married life!
So, what did Jesus do? He turned water into wine.
Not just a glass or two. But, when you do the maths about the volume John gives us in the story – it’s the equivalent of 800 bottles of wine! Excuse the lame pun, but the quantity causes you to gulp!
(okay – that’s pretty lame pun!).
And, John tells us that this wasn’t the $11 bottle of wine you pick up on your way to a BBQ. This is the good vintage quality.
So, this all unexpected. What makes this even more surprising is that this is Jesus’ very first miracle.
You think Jesus would reserve the first miracle for something dramatic. … Lazarus rising from the
dead… an oppressed person freed, feeding a crowd of 5000. We know that Jesus can do all this – and would go on to do all this. So, why would Jesus make his first public miraculous demonstration turning water into wine? It seems like a cheap party trick.
John highlights the reason: He says, “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory.”/ John 2:11
Signs point to something. Many of you will be travelling over the next couple of weeks. You will see some signs that help you in your journey, pointing to a destination. That destination is not the piece of wood on a pole. The sign is certainly not the destination!
In other words, this miracle is pointing to something. Jesus produces quantity and quality wine to save the party because he is ultimately pointing to something much bigger that he wants us to see.
That’s where this next verse comes in. Because, Scripture spoke of the Messiah bringing a new kingdom where there is dancing, joy, celebration, rejoicing…
If someone can read ‘Verse 6’
In Jerusalem, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world. It will be a delicious banquet with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat.
There he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth. He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears. He will remove forever all insults and mockery against his land and people. The LORD has spoken!/ Isaiah 25:6-8
The coming of the Messiah would be like a delicious banquet with well-aged wine and wonderful spread. It’s all about both quantity and quality in this massive banquet.
With that banquet comes a renewed world: Insults, mockery, tears, the cloud of gloom and the shadow of death are swallowed up. Instead, he brings a party!
Jesus is saying, ‘the Messiah is here. It’s me! With my coming, I bring joy. What’s up there is coming down here. I am transforming the “cloud of gloom” into a sunrise of joy.’
Boy, does our society need some joy right now. All the news seems grim. Even the weather reports give their attention to storms. Tomorrow is usually ‘partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain.’ Did you notice that it’s never ‘mostly clear with an 80 chance of sunshine.”?
It’s so easy to get distracted on what’s not going well. But, when we know Jesus – Emmanuel – is present, we find joy. Because those water experiences of life can be turned into wine.
We know Jesus gets us in our laughter – because Jesus turns water into wine.
So… onto the next layer of Pass the Parcel/ let the music roll…
#5 [Jesus invitation is for you to experience joy]
[orange card]
If someone can read ‘Verse 7’
“I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”/ John 15:11
This is what Jesus wants you and me to experience: a joy that overflows!
This is what is at the core of the Christmas story.
If someone can read ‘Verse 8’
“Here is what we announce to everyone about the Word of life. The Word was already here from the beginning. We have heard him. We have seen him with our eyes. We have looked at him. Our hands have touched him. This life has appeared. We have seen him. We are witnesses about him. And we
announce to you this same eternal life. He was already with the Father. He has appeared to us. We announce to you what we have seen and heard. We do it so you can share life together with us. And we share life with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this to make our joy
complete.”/ 1 John 1:1-4
God became tangible. One of us.
We could see him, hear him, touch him. Tangible.
As we grasp how God became one of us – in a tangible way so that people could see him, hear him, touch him – We realise He totally gets us.
That leads to joy: our joy [is] complete.
Yes, there are lots of needs around. I get it. As a pastor, a week doesn’t pass without my hearing or dealing with life in the raw. After all, most people don’t call the church when they’re celebrating:
[“hey – I just a massive pay rise or found a new friend. Wanted you to know!) ... They call when someone when they’re in trouble, when someone is sick, when there is a gaping hole in their life’].
The most natural thing for me to do would be to allow all of that to rob me of my joy and to change me from a person of joy to a stoic, frowning, grumpy pastor.
No thanks!! Because, the kingdom of God is a place of joy. Your kingdom come Jesus on earth as it is in heaven. Up there is joy. Help joy flow here too!
It means we need to change our perspective about even the pain and the disappointments.
I saw a Jucy rental van the other day: It was picking up the question we often ask, ‘are you a glass half empty or glass half full?’ I love the way they answered. On the side of the van were the words‘the glass is half full … and the other half was delicious!’ That’s life in the kingdom of God!
Interestingly, someone once asked Mother Teresa, missionary to India, what the job description was for anyone who might wish to work alongside her in the congested streets, narrow alleys, and horrid stories of Calcutta at the time. Without hesitation she mentioned only two things: the desire to work hard and a joyful attitude. Joy is the trait Jesus wants us to experience.
We know Jesus gets us in our laughter – because Jesus’ invitation is for you to experience joy.
Of course, if this is the invitation, the question is - have you RSVP’d?
Have you personally responded to Jesus to say ‘I want to do life with you.’ That experience of joy is part of the journey with Jesus. That happens by talking with him. Surrendering over our life him. To now do life together, following his leadership.
What’s more: Are you inviting your friends to this party? Tomorrow in the staff room or when you’re catching with friends and someone asks what you did over the weekend – ‘I did a bit of stuff around home… went to church on Sunday and heard how Jesus gets us in our laughter and joy.’ That can spark an invite to have your friends join in Christmas Eve.
Yesterday, we had the joy of having one of our neighbourhood Christmas parties. Did you know we will be feeding 850 people through one of these neighbourhood parties this week? Effectively, giving people a taste of the joy Jesus invites us to experience.
Why not think of ways you can invite people to experience joy this week?
--
So… onto perhaps the final layer of Pass the Parcel/ let the music roll…
[red card]
What’s in the centre? A giant party popper! The reminder that Jesus gets us in our laughter and joy.
If someone can read ‘Verse 9’
Taste and see that the LORD is good./ Psalm 34:8
If someone can read ‘Verse 10’
“I have come so they may have life. I want them to have it in the fullest possible way.” / Words of Jesus from John 10:10 (NIRV)
Jesus gets us in our laughter and joy.
- He enjoyed life to the full.
- He celebrated holidays with family
- He found pleasure in good food and friendly conversation.
- He gathered with friends.
- He attended wedding celebrations.
- The whole time, he invites you and me to experience that joy that He brings too.
