Easter, 1982 Ian Grant held an event at the Auckland Town Hall.

A “Youth For Christ rally”, where hundreds of young people gathered.

I was just four years old at the time, but I still remember…

Sitting up there on the balcony with my Mum and my brothers and sister, age 4,6,8,9

(any other Mums out there that keep bringing your little kids along to Christian events? - yeah keep doing that!)

Seeing this powerful visual drama, with music, and lights, and dancers

I was so impacted when I saw this actor hanging on the cross in pain. And something grabbed my heart so deeply when I saw the triumph of the resurrection.

I remember hearing Ian Grant speak and give the altar call

…and running down those stairs and down the aisle

Trying to get close to the stage. Pushing past all of the tall old people (who were probably young people, but to the four year old they were old!)

I remember repeating the words of a prayer

As I gave my life to Jesus.

….41 years ago, THIS week.

It’s never too early or too late to give your life to Jesus.

Today, something may be stirring within you already.

At the end of this message, we’ll all be coming toward these table to receive communion. And there will be an opportunity, if you want to give your life to Jesus, for you to do so.

Today as we look at the last part of the book of Mark, the final message in our series.

THE RESURRECTION.

We find ourselves at the TOMB. …a place of questions and faith

Today we’ll be looking at both. Questions and faith.

We’ll look at three scenes in Mark 16, if you could turn there with me on your Bible app…

SCENE ONE - moving toward the tomb with questions, grief, and spices.

The story today begins with grief and hopelessness, before we get to the resurrection.

For me in my journey, even though faith began so young,

I also wrestled with questions and doubt, ….which is quite normal for all followers of Jesus

And these doubts can feel like a huge boulder that stands in the way….

Who will roll away the stone?

It’s the question on the lips of three women, as they walk towards the place of the dead.

SCENE TWO - inside the tomb with the messenger from God

The question about the stone is already answered. The stone has been rolled away.

We enter into this space with the women and find an angel. A messenger from God

The angel tells us “Jesus is risen!”

But not only that, but the messenger now sends them to be messengers of this good news.

SCENE THREE - fleeing from the tomb full of fear, shocked and silent

Very typical reactions for nearly every person in the bible that encounters an angel.

With the added complexity of grief, uncertainty, concern for their safety.

With a desire to believe, blended with lingering questions and grief.

This is where the story ends in Marks original gospel

It’s a cliffhanger. To be continued.

The final episode of that Netflix series that has another season coming.

In the other gospels, Matthew, Luke and John, we meet the saviour who is alive again.

But the most reliable original sources and scholars consistently show us that Mark chooses to finish differently. Not because Mark doesn’t believe in the resurrection, no, clearly, the last words spoken in the gospel, by the angel declare that Jesus is alive….

But because Mark wants to leave the response to this message in the hands of the listener.

“Mark writes for those who never will experience Jesus’ physical presence” (Garland)

As, one commentator puts it. Helpful for us, reading 2000 years later.

We feel like we’re right there with these women, we can identify with their questions and emotion. We’ve heard this amazing message from the angelic messenger.

…and we go walk with the women as they try to piece it all together.

Another commentator, Morna Hooker, describes the intention demonstrated throughout the whole of this gospel. Mark’s desire is “to leave his readers to make the crucial step of faith”.

Like the skilled evangelist these days in an Alpha course setting, who enable that space of curiosity to ask and facilitate great questions.

So what do you think? What do you believe happens?

SLIDE: (Picture of the spinning top spinning on the bench in the final scene of Inception)

When I think back to my teenage years, to be honest I really struggled with the way Mark’s gospel ended, and the footnoted section that was added later. It caused me to question, wait, is this part of the Bible or not? Over the centuries, some church leaders have arrived at different conclusions….Some suggest that the codex format meant that maybe the beginning and ending of Mark were lost.It appears that early church leaders tried to draw from other gospels to write the conclusion that we want to hear. Some christians have chosen to accept all of these words as Scripture。While most scholars conclude that Mark intended it to finish with the women leaving the tomb. Like I say, I used to struggle with this….But now, I love it. In my view, it’s the perfect end to this gospel. We haven’t seen the resurrected Jesus, or witnessed the ascension. But we have everything we need to come to our own conclusion.

Like that final scene of Inception, we know the spinning top is going to stop.

We are sure it is real. All of the story fits now.

We get to the end of Mark’s gospel. We haven’t met the risen saviour.

But we have everything we need to respond to the good news.

The ending creates curiosity and suspense, that makes us want to continue.

We as the listeners become participants and we must now make a decision for ourselves….

But let’s go back and look at these THREE SCENES at the tomb in more detail.

Because within these three scenes, there are three moments that we continue to wrestle with as followers of Jesus, that He may be inviting us to respond to today.

As we continue, I’d love to pray. Holy Spirit would you speak to us. Would you minister to all who are here today? May they hear the words that you want to speak into their hearts.

SCENE ONE...moving toward the tomb

They’re all ready. They have what they need. Those special spices and perfumes. The ones they’ve just bought. The substances used in their culture as a way to preserve and honour the deceased. But personally, I’m wondering if it’s going to do much good. Putting perfume on the perishing corpse? Trying to smother the stench of death with spices? It might work ….but for how long? Easter Sunday begins with loss. Grief. Uncertainty. Hope that has died ….and a need to cover up what stinks with spices.Do you mind if we linger here for a little bit? Because I think that God wants to speak to us in THIS place.

I don’t know the story of how your day began today….

For those who are hurting right now.For those who might even be wondering today, is my faith even still alive? For those who’ve experienced deep losses in recent years.Do you mind if we allow God to speak to us in the middle of that journey toward the tomb, for just a bit longer.Of course we’re going to get to the resurrection in a minute and celebrate that.

Childhood童年

I remember when I was a kid, reading the Easter story in a Bible with pictures. As young as I can remember, I was so drawn in to the story of the cross.I didn’t like reading it. I hated what they did to Jesus. But I was captivated by the power of all that he chose to sacrifice for me. But I remember, I could never read half of the story. I HAD to keep reading until I got the resurrection. I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE JESUS DEAD.But you see now that I’m older, I’m so grateful that our Bible includes the pain in between.

The gap between之间的差别

There’s some time between Friday and Sunday. Some time when Jesus was dead!

Some time where disciples waited and wondered and wept.

SLIDE: Who will roll the stone away?

One day there are miracles!…but for the disciples, and for some here in the room…where is the miracle we wanted to see on Friday? One day Jesus IMMANUEL - GOD - IS - WITH - US!….and then on Satuday, He wasn’t! God where have you gone? One day the greatest friend and leader and teacher. He has all the answers!…but in the darkness of Sunday morning the answers are evaporating. …and now there are just more questions. Some of you have questions. Maybe you’ve got questions about things that have happened, and why God seemed distant.Maybe you’ve got questions about the bible. Some of it feels hard to stomach. You feel like you have to sanitise the story, putting perfume on dead pages to make it seem palatable.Maybe you’re exhausted with the emotion of all that has happened in the last 3 years.Maybe you even feel like the faith that was once the passion of your life, is laying …dead.

Personal story - flat tyre

Friends, the word of God, I believe, allows us to sit within the Saturday. To carry our questions and emotions with those disciples toward dead places. There is space for us in Scripture to smell the spices that we thought we’d need to use to disguise the damage of a dead faith.

As I was praying about this service, I sensed that for some in the room, this is the part God wants to minister to within you. As we take communion later, for some, part of the response will be to find a safe place in God where you can come as you are, including the pain and doubts and questions. To allow the Holy Spirit to minister to the grief and loss that you’ve experienced, and the uncertainty that has surfaced.

Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?

SLIDE: Mark 16:1-3 (ideally all, or just verse 2-3 here if it doesn’t all fit)

Can you identify with these women. Can you see the early morning sky just after sunrise? Do you notice the contrast of light with the darkness that covered the land at the cross?

Can you smell these fragrances that are being carried. And we recognise these women. Don’t we? They were here just a few days ago. Just a few verses ago. In chapter 15v40 these same women Mary, Mary and Salome. Mark writes about these same three women, that they were watching from a distance. They saw where the body was laid, and they also witnessed one of the greatest declarations in the Word of God……we’ll come back to that in a moment…

SCENE TWO…. inside the tomb with the messenger

SLIDE: Mark 16:4-5

Who will roll the stone away?

Well it turns out that we don’t have to! The stone has already been moved! We step INSIDE this place that housed death, and find a new hope.An angel with a message.

SLIDE: Mark 16:6-7

Marks gospel began with a messenger announcing what God is doing (John the Baptist 1:2-8). It concludes with a messenger declaring what God has done. The last spoken words of Mark…. You’re looking for Jesus. He is risen!…He’s not here though……wait a minute where is He?You will have noticed in Marks gospel, that Jesus is always on the move. Action packed from chapter one. And the resurrection is no different. “He is going ahead of you to Galilee” the angel declares…“Go and tell the disciples and Peter….”Picture this. Grief-filled emotion of dealing with death, …now the shock of seeing an angel. We’ve only JUST found out Jesus is alive, we’re still processing all this,And ALREADY God is calling us to go out and tell others about it!

he good news about Jesus is not just a message to believe, but a calling to go out.

For every person, I believe, Jesus is calling. Not just to believe in Him, but to go and tell others. The movement through Mark is now moving us into mission. As listeners we need to respond…

SLIDE: Will we go and meet Jesus in the places He is calling us to share our faith?

Garland makes a few points about this, firstly.“The command to go to Galilee does make one thing clear: Jerusalem is not the center of God’s movement. The disciples’ future lies elsewhere.” I sometimes wonder if the church building has become like our own version of Jerusalem. We want to stay gathering in the familiar place of worship, when Jesus wants to move us out into our neighbourhood. Galilee is the place where discipleship began (for many of these followers), Jesus will regroup with his followers, and send them out as disciplemakers.

Secondly, to note, that the verb used (proago) means more than just going ahead of his disciples. In other ancient Greek writing this word is used to convey the advancing of troops, or leading an army forward. It’s a strong word.Jesus is going ahead, not wandering ahead for us to catch up. But advancing His kingdom, and is leading His people in His great mission to the ends of the earth. We too, as Jesus people, as people of the resurrection are being called into this movement, outwards, to be proclaimers of this good news from day one. Today, is Jesus calling you to return to the simplicity of the beginning of your faith journey. To discover him again, as the resurrected saviour. And to renew the call to follow Him where He is leading you, into His great mission. We hear this call, this invitation, this sending from this messenger from God….…even while we’re standing inside the tomb.

The call that we thought was dead, is now alive again.

Will we go and meet Jesus in the places He is calling us to share our faith?

SCENE THREE… fleeing from the tomb

SLIDE: Mark 16:8

As we follow Mary, Mary and Salome from the tomb….Here’s a moment to reflect on our own fear and our faith; the questions in our heads and on our hearts; our calling and our own silence. These are all very human reactions. Mark seems to want us to sit with this and respond.

Who will roll the stone away?

These great big obstacles, doubts, questions and shortcomings…What do you think stands in between you and God right now? Friends can you see that the stone has been rolled away for us! There’s an empty tomb. A faith that is alive. Jesus has done it all already. We now just need to respond. …or to respond again, like Peter.…mentioned specifically by the angel, ‘go and tell the disciples and Peter”,Peter feels like he stuffed up too many times. He probably doesn’t consider himself to be a worthy disciple any more. But God want’s Peter to know and to hear, and Peter will get his opportunity to respond and to be restored.

SLIDE: Who do you say I am?

Will there be an echo from the middle of the book of Mark? When Jesus asked Peter, who do you say I am? How will we respond as Jesus asks us the same question today “Who do you say that I am?” It’s our turn to respond now. As we conclude our series in the Mark,

Let’s quickly recap and respond…

Recap Gospel of Mark

In the opening pages here’s Jesus, coming up out of the water of baptism. The heaven’s RIP open in Mark’s graphic language. Shizo - a tearing.Something is happening. Heaven coming to earth. The kingdom is here. And this voice that identifies Jesus “This is my beloved SON”。Toward the end of the gospel. Jesus is breathing His last breath upon the cross. The veil RIPS apart (the only other time that Mark uses that same word),Something is happening. The kingdom is here. The way has been made for us to be joined with God again. And this voice identifies Jesus, this time even the centurion, representative of the WORLD recognises, The Centurion declares “Truly this man is the son of God”,These were the scenes that the women in our story seem to have observed.

And now it’s our turn, as the gospel of Mark concludes. What will you say? How will you respond?

The Tomb | Mark 15:42 – 16:8 NIV

Mark 15:37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

The Burial of Jesus 42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.

Jesus has risen. Mark 16: 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
