Life can be hard at times, can’t it?! We need to know ‘how do we endure in the tough times?’
Today, we’re going to hear three coaching tips that will help you finish the race well.
Perhaps you heard this phrase before: “The Christian life is more a marathon than a sprint.”
While it’s an apt description of the Christian life – the thought of a marathon scares me. I have never run a marathon. And it’s not something I have on my bucket list.
It’s not that I dislike running. I actually love to get out for a jog and clear away a few cobwebs. But, I like to run at a pretty fast pace. So after 15-20 minutes - I’m done. I head home the colour of a beetroot and look like I have been dosed with a firehose!
So when I think a marathon – running for like 4-5 HOURS – that’s a crazy world!
But, I have friends who love marathons. One of them is Campbell Forlong who lives in Raglan. He has completed 52 marathons over 52 weeks – so one a week! He has also competes in ultra-marathons – for fun! Are you familiar with ultra-marathons? They are longer than the 42kms of a standard marathon. So, he recently completed a 73km ultra marathon which 1) off road. … 2) Elevated. … 3) Along rough terrain.
So, when I wanted to know what’s the hardest part of a typical marathon, I checked in with people who know from experience about marathons. And I asked ‘what’s the hardest part?
The message that came through again and again is that the hardest part of a marathon is typically between 29 km and 37 km. While different for everyone, most say the hardest part is about 2/3s of the way in. You’ve run a long way. You still have about a third or quarter to go. You can’t see the finish line yet. As one person said, “It can be hard to dig yourself out of this self-wallowing hole. 13 km still to go! That’s over another hour! And I’m already exhausted! I don’t know if I can keep going like this.”
The start is pretty easy. The race is still before you, great crowd around you. That’s also when it comes to this Christian marathon of life. The first few steps are pretty exciting. Getting to the starting line might be hard. Making that choice to be on the course can take a lot of musing. I’m conscious that some of you right now are at the point of exploring faith. If that’s you – it’s great to have you listening in and connecting like this.
Typically, when people make that choice to say ‘I’m in. I’m now a follower of Jesus’ - those first weeks can be full of excitement as you set off on a new adventure. It’s like you’re keeping in step with all these fellow runners. All moving in the same direction.
What’s true for a marathon can also be true in this Christian journey. Somewhere mid-way in the race, – wherever that might be – many Christians hit the wall when it comes to their faith.
Here in our reading today, it’s like Peter is taking the role of a coach on the side line – cheering us on when we feel like we’re about to drop out of the race.
Now, Peter doesn't use the image of running here in the passage but it’s a common image throughout Scripture to highlight the journey we’re all on. And Peter IS talking about endurance. When we think of a marathon we think of endurance. There is certainly much in Scripture that calls us to endure and persevere.
Author Eugene Peterson once described the healthy Christian life with a beautiful phrase - A Long Obedience in the Same Direction/ Eugene Peterson. That has the sound like a marathon to me, not a sprint.
It’s a long way – step by step – keeping to the course in front of us.
The people Peter has in mind are Christians who are finding it tough. They’re feeling the pressure and assault from wider culture. They see the raised eyebrows. All this is beginning to take its toll on them.
They’re about to hit the wall or drop out of the race.
So, what do we do when we’re about to hit the wall and want to give up?
How is it that we endure? How is it that we keep going?
Peter has three coaching tips here in our passage. What he says here in 1 Peter 4 is designed to help us endure.
Here is the first one:
#1 Don’t be surprised when the race gets hard, but be encouraged that Jesus ran the same race
He says:
Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were
happening to you. / 1 Peter 4:12
Here is the thing: We all intuitively know that injustice is not the way it’s meant to be.
And so, when you are accused of something you haven’t done, or someone calls you some derogative name that isn’t true– it hurts. It’s unjust.
So, it’s natural to feel slanted. To feel hurt. We want to push back and get a fair hearing.
When it happens, you might be surprised by the kind of behaviour you have to endure as a Christian – because the experience of injustice is never the way the world was designed to be.
But, Peter knows that this world IS broken in all sorts of ways. So he says – ‘don’t be surprised by some fiery trials that might come your way.’ He’s not saying it’s right. The truth is ‘it’s not right. It’s not just. It’s not fair.’
Peter is trying to adjust our expectations because he wants us to stay in the race.
He knows there are going to be times when an obstacle is placed in front of you that seems way too hard to get over or around. Or you will face some hill that seems way too high to run – and your legs are already fatigued. Or, the terrain suddenly gets rough. Or you see that long stretch of road that never ever seems to end.
It’s that 29km mark in our faith when we’re out of breath and then the challenge comes. The motivation to stay in this Christian journey is at an all-time low.
Peter is trying to prepare us to face such times. He understands that if can adjust our expectations to assume we will face issues and difficulties – then we will be better equipped to keep running the race.
He’s not the sort of coach that says ‘you’re going to love every part of this marathon. It’s all going to be so much fun. What could be hard!?’ Rather, he is honest and upfront – Don’t be surprised when the race gets hard.
The apostle Paul said something similar:
“everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution..”/ 2 Timothy 3:12
I’ve never heard anyone having that as their life verse!
It’s a clear and common theme through Scripture. Jesus himself said:
“If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world…”/ John 15:19
In other words, If you went with the flow, believed the same things as people in wider culture, if you didn’t stand out – the culture around you would love you as one of its own. But, the thing is – if you’re a follower of Jesus, you are not of this world. Jesus says ‘You are on my team. You bear my name. You stand out because of your distinctive way of life.’
Jesus went on: “I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? …Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you./ John 15:19-20
Remember what they did to Jesus? They shunned him. They cancelled him. So – don’t be surprised if they don’t listen to you, if they don’t respect you, or if the race gets hard.
Then, Peter gives some encouragement:
Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will
have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. / 1 Peter 4:13 (NLT)
Jesus was hit with the same challenges – and he got through them. When he finished the race, he was seated in the place of honour.
A couple chapters earlier Peter has already told us that Jesus is our example when it comes to enduring suffering:
Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps…When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly/ 1 Peter 2:21, 23 (NIV)
Some of you right now feel like you’re at the end of yourself: mentally confused; emotionally drained; physically exhausted; spiritually spent. In those times, everything within us wants to give up.
From a purely human perspective, we often think this is the worst possible situation to be in. But from a divine perspective, this is what actually can draw us closer to Jesus. In fact, we’re never more dependent on the Holy Spirit’s strength than when we’ve come to the absolute end of ourselves, or to use Peter’s language – when “we become a partner with Christ in his suffering.”
Peter understands that there is an affinity we share with Jesus. And that your pain is providing you an opportunity to draw closer to Jesus, to have an affinity with him.
When we experience the pain that other people have faced – we tend to have an affinity with them.
It might be the couple who has struggled to get pregnant and they meet in a support group.
Immediately, there is a connection – a shared understanding that comes through disappointment and pain. That’s the idea here - when we experience slander, loss, injustice – it gives us a greater affinity with Jesus.
Peter wants to encourage us by reminding us that Jesus ran the same race. That Jesus understands the pressure and pain points.
So how do we endure when the race gets tough?
As a coach, hear Peter cheering you on from the side line:
#1 Don’t be surprised when the race gets hard, but be encouraged that Jesus ran the same race (vv 12-13)
Then, as a coach, he shares his next coaching tip:
#2 Don’t be ashamed about Jesus – but be honoured to be part of His team (vv 14-16)
Some of Peter’s original readers were finding life particularly hard.
They may have been living good lives and being a blessing to others, but …
… Some of them were losing their jobs.
… Some of them faced mistreatment and abuse.
… Some of them had their good names trashed.
… Later some of them would be thrown to the lions, burnt as human candles.
You see, throughout history and all around the world, followers of Jesus have faced difficulty.
Right now, there are Christians in other countries in prison because of their faith. It was illegal for them to meet and illegal to talk publicly about Jesus - but they did. They are now in prison.
Some of you can relate to this – because you can’t return to your country of origin because of your conversion to Christianity. I’ve heard your stories. I’ve been part of some of your immigration applications.
But here in NZ - we’re not in the same situation. We are not being thrown into prison for our faith. In NZ, it’s legal to convert to Christianity. In NZ, we are able to meet legally and publicly as followers of Jesus. We don’t want to miss all the things we have to be thankful for or pretend that everyone is out to get us.
Having said all this, let’s not minimize the increasingly hostility Christians are facing here in NZ.
The public disdain is not a figment of our imagination. No amount of PR work is going to rescue the church from being thought by some as backwards and bigoted.
The pressure may well get harder – making it feel like we’re at the 29km mark of the a long marathon.
With all this in mind, Peter writes:
If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you./ 1 Peter 4:14.
Though we use the name “Christian” quite commonly today, the name “Christian” appears only three times in the New Testament. We’re told in the book of Acts that “the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.” The term was most likely a derogatory title used by opponents of Christianity to “label” these disciples. Look at those ‘Christ-ones’ – the Christians.
People love to put labels on others – then and today.
Several names or descriptions tend to be thrown around these days: bigoted, irrelevant, fundamentalist.
In such times, it’s understandable we want to bail from the race.
But coach Peter says: Don’t be ashamed about Jesus – but be honoured to be part of His team.
Where did he get this idea?
Wasn’t it Jesus himself who said that we are blessed when people persecute us?
Listen to these words from Jesus’ sermon on the Mount:
“God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.”/ Words of Jesus in Matthew 5:10-12
This has been the way for the people of God since the beginning.
When people turn their back on you - remember many turned their back on Jesus\
When people slander your good name – remember many did the same to Jesus
When people seek to cancel you – remember they cancelled Jesus.
Jesus looks you in the eye and says “you’re blessed!” “Consider it an honour that you are part of my team and bear my name – a Christian, a Christ-one.”
The All Blacks Rugby team often talk about the pride they experience when they wear that black jersey and head onto Eden Park. They represent something, someone bigger than themselves. It’s like persecution is our Jersey. Jesus says, ‘wear it with pride. You are part of my honoured team.’
But Peter also knows that some suffering is actually deserved. So he says:
If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. /1 Peter 4:15 (NLT)
That kind of suffering is on you.
Peter gives obvious cases – murder and stealing will of course have some justified penalties by the governmental authorities.
Then he talks about moral and social offenses. How we can needlessly align ourselves with causes and activities that are not at the heart of the good news of Jesus. We can wrongly annoy and irritate our colleagues and neighbours. Or we can meddle unnecessarily into people affairs. Or we're tactless.
See, if you’re talking about your Christian faith in an abrasive way, an insensitive way, a culturally inappropriate way, and people oppose you, don’t say, “I am being persecuted for Jesus’s sake!” No, you are being persecuted for your sake.
But coach Peter encourage us to keep on going for Jesus. So, he gives a couple of lines here that are absolutely treasures:
But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!/ 1 Peter 4:16
If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you./ 1 Peter 4:14
The same Spirit that rested on Jesus as a Dove – that same Spirit rests upon you.
His power.
His presence.
He is able to sustain you.
Jesus says ‘you are blessed. Wear that name ‘Christian’ with the realisation that Jesus honours you. His Spirit rests upon you. It’s a privilege to hear his name.
So how do we endure when the race gets tough?
We’ve heard two chants from Coach Peter as he screams out to us from the side lines to encourage us: “keep on going!”
#1 Don’t be surprised when the race gets hard, but be encouraged that Jesus ran the same race (vv 12-13)
#2 Don’t be ashamed about Jesus – but be honoured to be part of His team (vv 14-16)
He has one more thing to say:
#3 Don’t be short-sighted about this tough patch, but keep your eyes on the finish line (vv 17-19)
When you hit that 29km mark – it’s easy to give up. So, Peter reminds us about what is to come.
He’s mentioned this before. Earlier in the chapter he has said:
Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead./ 1 Peter 4:4-5
Perhaps you might feel like you’re losing out on something because of your faith.
Because of your faith, you maintain integrity at work. So you lose that account.
Or you advocate for someone that is mistreated unfairly – and the group turns on you.
Or because you don’t laugh at that joke about someone in the office –you’re accused of failing to be a team player.
Or because You don't go to that party, you’re seen as a social reject.
Or because you refuse to do things that others do - you miss out on being in the ‘in- group.’
Your name might be trashed. You might be misunderstood.
It’s easy to ask in this times: is it worth it?
So, Peter says Don’t be short-sighted about this tough patch, but keep your eyes on the finish line.
You may not be able to see the finish line.
Sometimes all you can see is the hill. It’s steep. Your body aches. You don’t know if you can make it.
Sometimes all you see are the obstacles that stand in your way, making it hard to keep going.
Peter continues:
So if you find life difficult because you’re doing what God said, take it in stride. Trust him. He knows what he’s doing, and he’ll keep on doing it./ 1 Peter 4:19 (MSG)
That word ‘trust’ means to place something in the care of another. You entrust them with what you value. It’s one of the last words Jesus cried from the cross:
“Father I entrust my spirit into your hands” / Luke 23:46 (NLT)
We trust him with our education, our business, our finances, our families, our relationships, our happiness, our security, our families well-being…
Rather than look at the obstacle or what we might be missing out on– we keep our eyes on the finish line. We entrust ourselves to him who will bring justice and make all things right.
The idea of a marathon might give you the impression that you need to try harder. That’s not the idea. It’s certainly got nothing to do with our running speed in life. Instead, it has everything to do with staying the course. Taking step after step after step; that long obedience in the same direction.
We do that by entrusting ourselves to our Creator day-after-day. And keeping our eyes on the finish line.
This is how others were able to finish their race.
I think of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who said ‘‘No, we won’t bow to some statue. We will worship God alone.’ What happened? They were thrown into a fire.
I think of Daniel who was told ‘you can’t pray to anyone but the governing king.’ What happened? He was thrown into a lion’s den.
I think of Esther who risked her position and life as Queen to protect her people from genocide. It was a scary time for her.
I think of Peter and James who stood before the Sanhedrin who weeks earlier had orchestrated the crucifixion of Jesus. They were told to stop talking publicly about Jesus. Peter and John said - ‘no, we won’t stop talking about the One who is able to change lives.’
We’re told that what got all of them through the severe challenges that were thrown at them on their journey– was that they looked to the finish line.
After talking about such people in the book of Hebrews, the author then looks at you and me and
says:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith./ Hebrews 12:1-2.
So, Don’t be short-sighted about this tough patch, but keep your eyes on the finish line
After all, the Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. When we hit that 29km mark – it can be rough.
My prayer for you is that you would run well and finish well.
That each of us can say what the Apostle said as he looked down the barrel of further suffering:
I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace./ Acts 20:24
What keeps you going is what Peter – as our coach – has said to us today:
#1 Don’t be surprised when the race gets hard, but be encouraged that Jesus ran the same race
#2 Don’t be ashamed about Jesus – but be honoured to be part of His team
#3 Don’t be short-sighted about this tough patch, but keep your eyes on the finish line
Keep running a good race – that long obedience in the same direction.
