焦點
Does anyone ever get distracted? I was walking with my granddaughter this past week, we were going to a preschool activity in our community, but on the way she stopped and looked at everything, sometimes she just stopped. She wanted to go to her activity, she had talked about it, but she had no idea of the urgency, if we took too long we would be late or miss out completely. Children eh!
Actually, I’m not that different. When I don’t feel the urgency, I can get distracted, on social media, shopping, at home, even work but more importantly I can get distracted in my faith journey. We can adopt a 2 year old’s posture of just wandering in our faith, reading a verse from the Bible here, attending a service online or in-person, even serving or being part of a connect group – without having a sense of urgency or focus on our eternity. We live in and for now!
What am I living for?
We’ve been asking some BIG life questions during this series
Who am I? Where am I going? Why am I here?
I guess the answers to these questions could often depend on our current life circumstances. When things are going well, accordingly to our plan it’s much easier to give a positive response. Yet life doesn’t unfold that way does it?
Our circumstances can change overnight, health issues, financial or relational challenges, many of these things we have no control over.
No wonder King Solomon reminded us to guard our hearts.
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else guard your heart for it’s the source of everything you do in of life”.
Your heart is the essence of who you are, your dreams, your desires, and your passions. It is that part of you that connects with God and other people. He doesn’t say, “If you get around to it” or “you should consider this, No, he says, make it your top priority.
“Above all else!”
Pot plant: Let’s use this little plant to remind us to guard our hearts, protect and nurture them. Grow our capacity to live and love like Jesus.
If I asked you What are you living for?
How would you respond?
My guess is there would be a wide variety of answers. Some would be aspirational, you like that idea, sounds good – helping people, my family, financial security, to be happy and healthy
We all need purpose in life.
Either our intentional purpose or our shadow purpose, shaped by our behaviours.
Purpose is the WHY behind what we do and how we do it, We are wired for purpose and actually find it difficult to do tasks that have no purpose. The torture of PoW who had to dig holes, and then when they had completed it - told to fill it in. Over and over again….It breaks the human spirit when we don’t have purpose.
Purpose matters more than money when it comes to job satisfaction,
Purpose matters more than the time we give when we volunteer
Purpose is an anchor in times of conflict, stress and suffering – helps us hold on, give us hope for a better tomorrow.
Grab your Bibles or open your YouVersion Bible app on your phone to 1 Peter 4:1-11. There are some helpful truths here – If you are not yet a follower of Jesus, there are some things you’ll hear today that are worth a try, but if you are already a follower of Jesus, stay focussed because this is mission critical. What we are talking about today, can change everything. Peter writes knowing the circumstances the followers of Jesus are facing and also from personal experience.
“Therefore since Jesus suffered physical pain, arm yourselves with the same attitude, he had ……and be ready to suffer too. 1 Peter 4:1 (For if you have suffered physically for Jesus, you have finished with sin. 1 Peter 4:1)
Feel encouraged? I’m not sure anyone says pick me – for suffering. In-fact our natural instinct is to avoid pain. Most often when we do suffer our prayers go like this, make this go away, change the situation, bring change Jesus, and quickly please.
Peter knew that the Christian community, his readers were suffering because of their decision for follow Jesus. They needed to view suffering through a different lens.
Suffering was not a sign of defeat or weakness, rather the intersection of their old life with their new life. Before they put their trust in Jesus and followed Him, they has spent their time doing the things that gentiles did.
The pleasures early Christians typically abstained from, were the popular forms of Roman Entertainment. Non participation was a change in behaviour and very noticeable.
Not everyone celebrated their new life choices, Christians were slandered, all this rejection was certainly painful, especially when it came in the form of rumours they could not correct or being ostracised from former friends or family. A decision to follow Jesus had a cost. Here’s the thing, what you see determines what you do.
What you see determines what you do!
If we see suffering as a negative then you are more likely to drift back to the old behaviours because it’s just too hard. If you expect it, and prepare for it then you are more able to embrace it, knowing the truth that you know the end of the story! Eternity awaits!
To be resilient they needed to STAND UP – be prepared,
“Arm yourselves” with the same way of thinking and resolve as Jesus. He had a clear mind, sense of purpose, he knew what he was living for and who he was dying for. This didn’t take away his suffering, or make it easy, but he knew his purpose and he held on to that picture of eternity with his father.
Jesus even tried to prepare Peter and the other disciples for what was ahead.
Don’t let your hearts be troubled…. John 14:1-3
Imagine being a disciple, how could you not be discouraged? Your teacher said he would die.
A Christians sense of value and self-worth and identity are grounded in the hope we have. Having a proper view of eternity will drastically affect how we live and also prepare us to suffer.
Here’s the win – if you arm yourselves with the same way of thinking as Jesus then….
“You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God” 1 Peter 4:2
Peter contrasts these two mindsets, if you are not anxious to do the will of God, you are probably chasing you own desires. You shape your world around your needs.
You may not be involved in the same behaviours that Peter mentioned like lust, feasting, drunkenness and wild parties, but don’t dismiss this too quickly. We have our cultural distractions that take our focus from doing the will of God, work, exercise, eating, shopping, Netflix, property, even family. These aren’t in opposition to the will of God, however they can take our focus and somehow God is expected to fit in around our plans.
[You have had enough in the past of the evil things, that godless people enjoy – their immortality lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties and their terrible worship of idols. Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. (3-4)
“….But remember that they will have to face God who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. 1 Peter 4:5
Peter brings encouragement to those suffering that all will be called to account for their actions, their persecutors will be judged. You don’t need to have the last word.
God will have the final say, it’s what He says that matters most.
Accountability after death was not widely taught in the pagan world. Yet Peter makes it clear, no one is exempt from God’s coming judgement, death is not the end. The awareness of Judgement is healthy for Christians, however not so popular with our world. We live in a day when we want to avoid consequences, we justify behaviours, find loop holes in rules to allow us to do what suits us. We lose sight of the fact that Judgement will come, ready or not!
People can be good and do good things, but it’s only Christian when it’s in obedience to Jesus. Some people focus too much on judgement, others see God as so soft that we don’t have to fear him because there will be no consequences. Peter paints a picture of resilience where we know and experience the love of God, but recognise that we will be judged, held accountable.
I wonder if this is from another flash back from his life, when he was in the shadows around the fire after Jesus arrest and three time he denied knowing him. He felt the consequence of his decision to put his own interests ahead of Jesus. That regret he must have felt when he locked eyes with Jesus and realised what he’d done.
Those words must have sunk deeply into his heart. He could not undo what he had done.
Psychologist Henry Cloud puts it this way.
“It can be difficult to let go of old patterns, habits, and relationships, because if nothing else, they're familiar to us. We think they provide us some sense of security, but the real comfort will come when you have the courage to let those old things go and open yourself up to new hope. You don't have the space for both the old and the new”
Our pot. If this plant is our heart our capacity to grow, then the pot represents those old patterns of behaviour, those things we have drawn our security from. We need courage ……(drop the plant and break the pot)
We have the freedom and capacity to grow, because we are no longer constrained by the past. Stay focussed – don’t get distracted
Being focussed requires ignoring certain things to concentrate on others
Stand OUT
Verse 7 is the turning point, Peter revels 3 things we must do, to focus our lives and not be distracted by our circumstances.
The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. Most important of all continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:7-8
The end of the world or the last days refers to the time between Jesus first coming death and resurrection and when he comes back again. In God’s redemptive plan for the world, we are in the phase, waiting for Jesus to come back.
1. Pray Confidently
Be earnest and disciplined in your prayer
I wonder if Peter drew from a flash back in his own life when Jesus had asked him, James and John to watch and pray in the garden of gethsemane. Stay here and pray, when Jesus returned they were asleep!
They couldn’t stay focussed. Jesus challenged them and once again they fell asleep. Jesus urged them to pray so they might not fall into sin.
We sing – “When I fight, I fight on my knees” - battles are won in prayer!
I wonder how seriously you are about prayer?
There have been a number of research projects done on prayer and while the focus and questions changed the overall results, we don’t pray as often as we think we do, or as widely as we could
We pray ritually - around meal times
We pray bless us prayer
We pray when we need something
None of these are wrong, just not earnest or disciplined!
They also found most people prayed silently alone?
Very small percentage prayed regularly in a group, including families
How do you keep your prayer life vital and encouraging others to pray?
I wonder what would happen if we filled our minds with the word of God, postured ourselves to surrender our will to his will
What would change?
Let’s not fall asleep, get distracted or lose focus.
There’s prayer and then Most important of all: love is core to who we are followers of Jesus.
2. Love Deeply
Another Peter Flashback, when Jesus was about to be arrested he used his sword to defend his friend. He cut off the ear of the servant That’s not love Peter, this is – and he picked up the severed ear and held it back against the man’s head, and he was healed.
This love is not an emotional feeling, though that is part of it, but dedicated determination to treat others the way God treats us. To believe the best in others and to persist when things get tough. It takes work.
Other translations use the word fervently. That’s a term used when you stretch a muscle and whilst its sore initially, the stretching increases its capacity to perform, enabling an athlete to run further and faster than before.
In fact, like a muscle, God allows us to be hurt, go through pain so that we can stretch our love, and express it more deeply. In the same way a muscle that has been stretched after recovering, it develops the capacity to lift a heavier load.
This deep fervent love covers a multitude of sins – this doesn’t mean that sin should not be exposed, it should, but there are constructive ways to do this, but also destructive behaviours.
Conflict happens in community – whenever there is 2 or more people there will be conflict. Peter is concerned about some behaviours and attitudes that could destroy Christian community They needed to love one another deeply because we being hurt by each other. Trials can often cause conflict -It takes work to love! The community that loves one another is able to forgive one another more rapidly. In contrast where love is lacking there is suspicion, and conflicts are numerous.
1 Corinthians 13:5– puts it like this - love keeps no records of wrongs.
I wonder if Peter remembered the conversation with Jesus on the beach after Jesus had risen for the dead – Peter do you love me? Jesus showed him forgiveness that he knew he didn’t deserve, but he longed for. The regret, shame, disappointment in himself Jesus covered over with his love restored him, and commissioned him to love others in the same way. As I read Peter’s words through this lens, it took on a whole new meaning, because he spoke out his own painful experience, his story of resilience.
Where will all this deep love come from? God has already given it to us, he has poured out His love in us, so it can flow through us. We have an endless supply when we are drawing from God’s resource not our own.
Who is God calling you to love more deeply?
Out of this deep love comes a practical generosity. Peter writes
“Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. 1 Peter 4:9
Hospitality is not possible without the kind of love we have been talking about. Love not just for your friends, but intentionally caring for those in need. Deep practical love, driving someone, getting groceries, bringing a meal.
In the context of Peter’s time, there were travelling preachers who moved from city to city and needed a place to stay. A challenge because most families were living hand to mouth anyway. It was a costly ask.
Peter not only referred to overnight guests, but for worship and fellowship. Here’s me thinking GaMP is a new initiative! NO! and it’s not a COVID response either, it’s a strategy!
By opening your home, using the technology and tools provided, you can invite people who might not come into church for various reasons
Life phase
Work schedule
Imagine what could happen if we had 15 people hosts their homes,
It wasn’t just an action, it was an attitude, without grumbling.
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do it with the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen 1 Peter 4:11
3. Serve Wholeheartedly
Anyone can serve, there are many ways we can come alongside and offer our time. Often the question I am asked is where do you need help?
Yet that’s only part of the picture, I like to discover, what are you passionate about, what gift or gifts has God given you?
That’s the difference between getting the job done and serving smarter, using our gifts
What do we know about serving and using our gifts?
God has given every Christian at least one spiritual gift
Your gift may be different to someone else
The purpose of this gift is to help others
All gifts are needed and used to bring glory God.
You cannot control how God has gifted you, but we can control how the gift is used. These are abilities that the spirit gives that a person must grow and use - putting them into action.
It’s like God’s grace shining through many people, making a display that points people to himself - a kaleidoscope, different colours changing.
If you don’t serve how can you use your gifts?
If you don’t use your gifts you can hinder God’s plan.
Spiritual gifts - FROM God TO you, FOR someone else
Peter knew that his readers felt powerless within hostile situations they face, these words remind them that all power belongs to the God they serve in the name of Jesus. While life is hard, they do have the resources to live out Jesus victory within their community because it comes not from themselves but from God, who has limitless supply.
Our view of eternity will radically change how we deal with our suffering but also how we love and serve others.
When we resist the temptation to go back to the old ways, living restricted by the things we brought around us as security and became distracted by our circumstances.
Stay focused
So what are you living for?
Have you lost sight of the reality that Jesus is coming back, Are you missing God’s best for your life because you have lost focus. Standing in this moment, with our heart to serve God and our eyes on heaven
Where do you need to pray harder, love deeper, or serve smarter?
