That clip is one of many in a campaign running across media agencies in the USA called ‘He gets us.’
Obviously, it has inspired our own Christmas theme this year.
The campaign has caused quite a stir. In fact, a radio station interviewed me about the campaign this this past week. As I said in that interview, I’m not here to defend or promote the campaign but some of the critique is really interesting.

Isn't this the most surprising truth behind the story of Christmas? Christmas is about Immanuel – God with us. Christians actually believe that God – the Almighty - actually did become one of us. So, Hetotally gets us.

Perhaps you’re exploring faith at the moment, or you’re in town with a friend or family member and out of politeness came along today. Maybe you’re wondering if there is a God. If there is, is Jesus Him?
Or, you’re a part of our church and would call yourself a Christian. So, you believe He is fully God but wrestling with how much He is actually able to be fully human.

One of the early followers of Jesus named John, wrote in his biography of Jesus’ life that God became human and made his home among us.
In the first 300 years after Jesus, the early church had to navigate different competing ideas about what that meant. Some said ‘He wasn’t really God.’ But, most of the confusion came not from a denial of His deity, but from a denial of his full humanity. There were actually more heresies that denied his full humanity than his full deity.

Christians seem to like the idea that God is one of us but at the same time it feels so wrong. How could the Creator of the Universe – the Almighty- actually become one of us/ a created being?
Perhaps he was more of a hologram that had the appearance of being with us – but not really. How could he think, feel, and act like the rest of us?! Just saying that seems so wrong.
Those of you older than 25 might remember a song from Joan Osborne that won her 5 grammy awards… ‘what if God was one of us?’ She’s not a Christian but she raised the question. What if God was some stranger on the bus on our way home. What if he might have been Bob the local plumber, or Glen the local tradesman. When that song came out, a lot of people took offence at her song. But, the good news of the Bible is that this is actually true: God became one of us. He was indeed a local handyman, a carpenter. There was nothing about the way he looked that caused people to notice him.

In a world where we feel things deeply, we need to understand that Jesus feels things deeply. He gets our tears. He gets our refugee status. He gets joy. He gets anger. He gets injustice.
Pastor and author Tim Keller sums it up well:
“Christmas shows you a God unlike the god of any other faith. … Christianity says God has been all the places you have been; he has been in the darkness you are in now, and more. And, therefore, you can trust him; you can rely on him, because he knows and has the power to comfort, strengthen, and bring you through.” / Tim Keller, Hidden Christmas

When you grapple with this truth that He gets us – you find incredibly empathy for what your feeling and facing right now.
Some of you are having visa issues and don't even know where you will be living 6 months from now.
It’s deeply unsettling. What difference might it make to know Jesus was a refugee for the first few years of his life.
Some of you feel lonely. You are going to be facing an empty chair around your table this Christmas because someone that you wish was going to be there and isn't, maybe through divorce, or death, or distance. What difference might it make to know that Jesus was lonely too.

Some of you are thrilled at the opportunities coming your way. Perhaps you don’t connect celebrations and Jesus in the same sentence cause we think it’s all serious and frowning. But, what if you knew Jesus let his hair down and loved to celebrate with friends?
Sometimes we feel like we have to park our highs and lows when we connect like this, or that what we’re feeling isn’t meant to affect Christmas. I want us to do the opposite this year. I want to encourage our musings this year to centre around this idea that He Gets Us. To actually identify your highs and lows and connect them to into the very Christmas story. Because we have a God who is Immanuel. He gets us.

And raises a range of connection points we might be feeling and facing.
Whether you are exploring faith. Or whether you been a Christian for several decades. Either way, I think all of us would do well with musings on this idea this Christmas.
Today, I want to take some vulnerable steps and share my low emotion this year. That’s disappointment.

Disappointment can be a devastating emotion. It’s a mixture of sadness, anger, hurt, and fear, disappointment comes because there is a gap between our experience and our expectations. We expected or wanted something that hasn’t happened in the way we expected it or wanted it to happen.
Inwardly I have felt a lot disappointment.
It’s not that I don’t have highs – for which I am incredibly grateful for. Home life is brilliant. I love what has been happening in our church with new online opportunities, new people, our church adoption, the way churches are uniting together across our city. It’s a wonderful time.

At the same time, I feel disappointment around me. I’ve farewelled people I hoped I would never farewell. I’m disappointed at the friction and unease in our city, in society, in our world.
I also feel the disappointment from others as what people want or expect from me is different to the reality of what people get or don’t get from me: I say or don’t say some things that people would like me to. I don’t support particular causes. What people expect or want from me – is often very different to the reality of me.
What I’ve come to see is that Jesus gets disappointment too. Not only was he disappointed about a range of things, but he also a disappointment to many people.

If I had to sum up the big idea I want to get across today, it’s this:
Jesus wasn’t born into a fairy-tale; from the beginning to the end, his life was surrounded by disappointment.
My hunch is that many of you also get disappointment. Things haven’t turned out the way you expected them to turn out this year. It’s disappointing.
Where things are in your career, or your business is not what you had expected at this point.
Or, what’s happened or happening in your family or among your friends is not what you expected or wanted to happen.
Or there is a gap between what you want in your health or your life and the reality of where things are right now.
Or, it might be that you know you have disappointed others. Perhaps they have misunderstood you.
Or, you didn’t measure up to some standard.

My hunch is that many of you also get disappointed by others and find yourself a disappointment to others.
Today, I want to move through some of the gospel accounts around this theme today – because I think we can find a lot of empathy and help this Christmas – knowing we have a God who gets us.

#1 Jesus disappointed in His birth
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly./ Matthew 1:18-19

Perhaps you have heard this passage read at a Christmas service. It can sound like a beautiful fairy take. Typically, we don’t grapple with the massive disappointment that all this caused Joseph to feel.
Joseph was engaged to Mary and she gets pregnant. He knows he isn’t the father. So, what would you think if you were him?
That’s what Joseph thought too.

He was in a shame and honour culture. A baby born out of marriage was the ultimate shame, sentencing you to a life of exclusion, to be 2nd class citizens for the rest of your life. The shame wouldn’t just go away.
The expectations that Joseph had of Mary and the reality of what he experienced were radically different. Talk about disappointment!
After this part of the story, we read an angel came to Joseph in a dream and that this caused him to see the situation differently – realising that the reality that this was a miraculous virgin birth. God was the Father!

So, he went on to marry Mary. But, none of that stopped the glares, the stares from others.
His friends would say to him ‘Joseph, either you got her pregnant, or she was unfaithful to you.’ I canimagine Joseph trying to tell them the truth: ‘Oh, I can explain. She is pregnant through the Holy Spirit.’ That truth isn’t something his friends understood. They thought he was either crazy, a liar, or gullible.
BTW, if you a follower of Jesus, it’s likely you will experience the same thing in some of your relationships. You will be placed in situations where you are misunderstood. You might face ridiculeand contempt. People can think less of us.

#2 Jesus disappointed his family
When he was 12 years old, we read that he went with his parents to a Passover festival in Jerusalem.
At the end of the Passover, his parents returned home but - unbeknown to them - Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first. They assumed he was among the travellers – wider cousins and friends from their area would often travel together.

Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. …His parents didn’t know what to think. “Son,” his mother said to him, “why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.”“But why did you need to search?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”But they didn’t understand what he meant./ Luke 2:44-50

If you were Mary or Joseph – you would be ticked off, right? Searching for your 12 year old for three days straight! He hasn’t communicated a word to you. You have no idea where he is. His response is ‘why did you need to search? Of course, I’m going to be in my Father’s house at the temple.’
Of course, Mary and Joseph are frantic, worried, confused.
Later on, he caused more disappointment to his family.

In Mark 3 we are told that:
Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. They stood outside and sent word for him to come out and talk with them. / Mark 3:31

Do you know why they are there? The reason they were there is because they thought Jesus was mad.
Mark tells us:
When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they

His family – at this time – didn’t understand who Jesus is. Later on, we know that James – his half brother – comes to be a key leader in the church and Mary is committed in her faith. But, there were times when they didn’t understand him. He was an embarrassment - a disappointment - to them as a family.
Perhaps you feel like this in your own family. People don’t understand you. Or you don’t seem to fit.
You’re not trying to cause rifts – but rifts seem to be happening. If so, maybe you have a lot in common with Jesus.

#3 Jesus disappointed his friends
I can only imagine the scene when first Martha and then Mary confronted Jesus. Their brother, Lazarus, had been dead for three days and they were convinced Jesus could have prevented his death.
Martha, the more practical and direct sister, marched out to the edge of the city to meet Jesus and confront him. Mary, the more emotional sister, fell weeping at His distraught women hurling accusations at Him.
They didn't understand what Jesus was doing. Sure, He would go on and raise Lazarus from the dead.
All part of his plan. But, it didn't change the way the sisters were at one point distraught and disappointed … for days.
#3 耶稣让他的朋友失望

#4 Jesus disappointed the crowd
There is a story in the first chapter of Mark’s gospel where the disciples have been searching to find Jesus. They find him in some obscure isolated place – praying.
When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”/ Mark 1:37
Why was the crowd looking for him? Because Jesus has been healing everyone. Making things right. I can imagine these disciples saying, ‘come on Jesus. Let’s get into the day. There are lots of people wanting miracles. Needing help. Where are you?’
Do you know how Jesus responds?
But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” / Mark 1:38
#4 耶稣让众人失望
马可福音第一章有一个故事，门徒一直在寻找耶稣。 他们在某个不起眼的偏僻地方找到他——正在祈祷。

When you unpack this, you have to grapple with the disappointment of the village he is leaving.
There’s this whole village that wants him to stay and he basically says, “No, got to go.” There’s this opportunity to do so much good, help so many people, and he turns it down.
Jesus doesn’t do everything.
His reason is that has a bigger purpose.

He was setting out resolutely to Jerusalem. He had a bigger reason – living, dying, rising, ascending.
As one person wrote, “He has a compass. He has an orientation. He has a way to orient his life, a path that he’s on. Jesus says no because he’s already said yes. He’s very clear on what his life is about. But
he can’t be everything to everybody.”
We can nod and understand this. But, for the people he said no to – they were disappointed. Jesus didn’t live up to their expectations of what they thought he should do. They didn’t get it.
Interestingly, you never see Jesus doing anything out of obligation. You never hear him saying, ‘Oh, I guess I should because I’m supposed to.’

So, if you have disappointed people, you are actually in good company with Jesus.
Now, I realise many of us disappoint people because of our own sinful tendencies. That’s certainly true for me. That part wasn’t true of Jesus. But, there was still a gap between what people expected and wanted, and what Jesus actually delivered.

Some of our leaders got together for a planning retreat last month and we were looking at this question of disappointment in the life of Jesus. I asked the leaders times when they thought Jesus disappointed others. They spoke of…
• The way Judas was disappointed at the way Jesus didn’t live up to his expectations of what the Messiah should be.
• The way the disciples got upset at the waste of the perfume poured out over his feet, that Jesus sees as an appropriate act of worship.

You see, the story of the gospels is so often the story of Jesus failing to meet the high expectations of those around them, subverting those expectations with a totally different narrative of what faith,hope, and love look like in God’s kingdom. And it was terribly frustrating and disappointing to those around him who needed him to be something different.
Jesus disappointed people – his family, his friends, and the crowd.

Not only did Jesus disappoint, he was also disappointed.
We all get disappointed. We expect one thing and get something else. We expect beef for dinner and get vegan. We thought we would get a refund from the IRD, and we end up owing money. The weather report promised sunshine for the weekend, but it rains. Disappointments like these are so common you would think that we would be used to them.
Then they escalate: the job that seemed so perfect goes to someone else. That person who would have been the perfect spouse does not return our affection. We prayed for healing but nothing changes.
耶稣不仅让人失望了，他自己也感到失望了。

The Book of Hebrews says Jesus was made like us “fully human in every way”/ Hebrews 2:17
He faced disappointments too.
So, what might you be disappointed about?
Is it a sense of betrayal? Or loneliness? Or the fear of what is to come?
Jesus has faced or this as well.

You say, ‘you don’t understand. I have prayed to God for things, and God ignored my prayer.
” In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus cried out “Father… may this cup be taken from me.” / Matthew 23:39.
He was talking about the cup of suffering. His prayer was turned down. You see, Jesus knows the disappointment of unanswered prayer.
Some say ‘I feel like God has abandoned me.’ What do you think Jesus was saying on the cross when he said
‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” / Matthew 27:46.
God has been all the places you have been. He has been in the darkness you are in now – and more.
That’s why we can trust him. Rely on him.

When you are going through difficulty, it’s common and easy to feel incredibly lonely. People around you may express sympathy, but it doesn’t help. Then you meet someone who had been through exactly the same thing. They know what it is like. You pour your heart out to them. You listen to them and their opinions because they have been through the same thing. Whey they comfort you, you are comforted.
Robyn and I have found this. At a particular hard time in our lives, we went to a support group with others who had gone through the same experiences. Immediately, there was this bond birthed by a shared experience.

God wants us to know that He empathizes with us. He gets us.
That’s why the passage in Hebrews continues:
He was made like us, fully human in every way, … because he himself suffered when he was tried and tested, he is able to help those who are being tried and tested.”/ Hebrews 2:17-18
If you have been a disappointment, you can find much consolation in Jesus because he failed to live up to the expectations of others too.

In our case, it might be our fault. That’s okay – he still forgives.
Or, it might be a matter of faulty expectations or misunderstandings. If so, give yourself some grace.
Because Jesus disappointed people too.
Or, you might be disappointed about the year gone by. Again, find consolation from Jesus. He understands. He gets us.
Jesus wasn’t born into a fairy-tale; from the beginning to the end, his life was full of disappointment.

• Talk to him now about the disappointments you feel and face.
• Thank him that He understands and is able to walk with you through what you feel and face.
