Lies about Self
Lies about self
JD mentioned that we are finishing a series today and I just want to acknowledge the fact that there may be some people in the room that because it's Mother's Day this is your first time perhaps in church maybe since last Mother's Day which is totally fine by the way if that's the case a quick tip if you are just a Mother's Day Church a tender just a quick tip especially if your mum is not here make sure you get a selfie next to the gray City Sign after the service and subtly post it on your Instagram and tag your mum with a tribute to your mum saying thank you Mum I was in church today even if she lived somewhere else around the world it'll do you a world of good all right now all the mums that are in the room if your child is with you I just gave the whole thing away okay but go ahead and take that photo next to the GraceCity Sign anyway I think it'll be fantastic.
If you're familiar with Netflix you'll be familiar with what I'm about to say we're in the end of a series okay and I want to encourage you if you weren't here for the beginning of this series Lies We Believe or any part ofthis series some of what we're going to talk about today may not make a lot of sense okay so it's kind of like when I come in at the end of a Netflix series with my family and I sit down on the couch and I start asking some people are nodding you know where this is going I start asking all my kids questions about characters in the series and they say shut up Dad just watch all the other episodes
I want to encourage you if you haven't seen the other episodes of this series go back online and catch up on them because the first particular episode of this series JD did a great job unpacking the big idea of the series and the big idea is this that we are actually whether you're a follower of Jesus or maybe this is your first time in church ever or first time Church in a long time we're actually in a bit of a battle our lives are a bit of a war and the battlefield is actually our minds that's where the battle is taking place and so this series Lies We believe we've been unpacking a whole bunch of things that we believe that are oftentimes lies.
JD did a great job of explaining the enemies on this battlefield are really three big enemies the World the Flesh and the devil and if that doesn't mean anything to you those three things go back and watch episode one all right I'm not gonna unpack the whole thing this morning but today we're going to dive into the last of the series Lies We believe about ourselves.
But before we dive in I'd like to play a quick game with all of you in the audience today and ifyou're watching online you can participate as well it might be awkward if you're in a cafe orsomething but I'm going to ask you all to stand with me if you're able to would you do me a favor would you stand and we're gonna play a game the game is called face-off okay and this Face-Off is the brand Edition okay so what I'm going to do is I'm going to bring an image up onto the screen and the way that it works is you are going to pick which side of the image you think is real and face that direction so if you think the real side of the image is on this side of the screen then you're going to face that wall if you think the real part of the image is on that side of the screen then you're going to face this wall now this is not a game for certain Generations because this is a game of elimination not everyone gets a trophy okay
I'm not going to pick on any generation in particular but if you're a part of one of those that love getting the trophy at the end we're actually going to try and get down to just one person in the room okay so I'm going to give you a freebie though this first one is a warm-up this is just gonna get everybody in the game okay
You're going to face the direction that you think is the real brand as I bring it up on the screen let's go ahead and bring it up on the screen all right the first one do you think it's the gray one that's in this direction or do you think it's the red one in this direction you've got about five seconds to pick if you're still facing me at the end you'll be eliminated as well all right again not everyone gets a trophy all right and the correct answer is the gray one the gray one is the correct answer I'm old enough to have had my very own pair of Jordan Ones back in 1985 my older brother bought me a pair of actual Jordans if I still had them today I wouldn't be standing on this stage speaking to you I'd be doing something else with my life all right the next one is an image of either a diamond a real one or a fake one now I hope that nobody bought their mum a diamond for Mother's Day and is about to find out that they got duped into a cubic zirconium I think it's called all right let's go ahead face Direction you think is real if you think it's this way or that way go ahead this is for all the marbles we're actually going to eliminate people that was a warm-up round before all right go ahead and reveal the correct one everyone that is facing that direction remains standing everybody else can be seated all right if you're in oh my goodness this side of the crowd don't buy jewelry okay whatever you do they will trick you very easily all right the next one here's a Famous Brand

Today we're talking about Lies We believe about ourselves and I want to say something up front just like we can get duped by a brand we can get duped into thinking that something we think about ourselves is true when it's actually not true and here's what we've been saying during this series we've been saying this that in order to overcome these lies that we believe we need to First be able to identify the lie a good friend of mine once said it this way he says you've got to name it so you can tame it if you can't name it then it's impossible to be able to tame that lie so we've got to identify the LIE then we said this that behind every lie is actually some sort of deceptive idea some sort of deception is behind that lie and we've got to identify and be able to articulate what is then deception behind the LIE and then finally we haveto replace the lie with the truth now if you're not a church person if you're watching online and you stumbled across this because you're trying to find some church service to impress your mum for Mother's Day and you're now watching great City online I don't know how you landed online or in the room today or what you think about God but here's what I know to be true you may not believe in him but he believes in you he believes in you and he believes some truth that we're going to unpack this morning that even if you're not sure that God exists I'm convinced you will hope that he exists because of the truths he believes about you here's what I've discovered over the years I've discovered that most of the time The Lies We believe about ourselves they oftentimes come from one original source in fact if you were to talk to a psychologist or a counselor somebody in the mental health profession they would agree they would say that most of the lies people believe about themselves originate from the same place my wife and I when we hear each other talking about our lives and maybe even sharing one of these lies with each other or maybe we overhear someone else talking about a lie that they believe about themselves we have this little phrase that we say to each other it's a little acronym we say to each other: FOOIE we sayFOOIEy and it stands for this simple phrase family of origin impacts everything now when I say family of origin impacts everything I'm not saying that every lie that we pick up along the way about ourselves necessarily comes from our specific family of origin it may come from your extended family it may have come from an aunt or an uncle or a cousin or perhaps it even came from your childhood because you are a part of a school and a teacher said something to you or a classmate said something to or perhaps you were part of a sporting club or an association like the scouts most of the lies that we believe come from our childhood and that's where we pick them up along the way here's what I've discovered though about these lies.
Lies we were told oftentimes become labels that we hold
lies we were told become labels that we hold and we hold on to them for a long period of time I was thinking about the popular lies that oftentimes people are told and uh I actually wrote them down on some labels one of the labels that I've heard over the years from people is that they were they were told that they weren't necessarily pretty and so they've carried this label of being ugly around with them another one that I've heard over the years and that I've even experienced myself is that I wasn't the smartest kid in the class and so I carried this label of being a little bit dumb with me throughout my life perhaps that's your story one of the ones that I've heard from a lot of people is this label from a lie that they were useless that they wouldn't amount to much that they weren't worth anything in fact I heard one person say to me that their dad told them repeatedly that they weren't worth the salt that he put on his food because of that they've carried a label of being useless and worthless their whole life here's another common one being unlovable unlovable it's impossible that I'll be loved perhaps because somebody didn't love me once so maybe I've had a couple of failed relationships therefore I'm unlovable to everyone here's another one that I hear oftentimes it's this label that I have to fake it
I have to fake it because if people knew the real me if they really knew what I was like if they really understood what I've done they wouldn't love me they wouldn't accept me so I have to fake it here's another one that I've heard
I've heard people carry the label of flirt because sometime when they were a teenager 30 40
50 years ago they one time had a friend or a classmate say to them oh you're a flirt and so
they just carried that label with them throughout their life here's another one because I failed
once or twice I'm forever a failure and then finally this is the one that I probably hear most
often and if you and I were sitting down having a cup of coffee or a cup of tea together I
would admit to you that this one of not being enough is probably the label that I carry most
deeply personally to be very vulnerable and very transparent with you I have this thing in my
mind that I carry with me that I'm not doing enough or I'm not being quite enough or I'm not
quite good enough fill in the blank I'm just not enough these are labels that come from lies
and
The Lies We were told they oftentimes become the labels that we hold I want to just bring up
a few of these that are that are quite common I find this one of I'm unlovable
let's talk about this lie of being unlovable what's the deception behind that lie from from time
to time when I'm having conversations with people people will say to me well Jason I failed
at a relationship or there was a person in my life that didn't love me or maybe there were a
few people that didn't love me and so because of that I just came to the conclusion that I'm
unlovable that's the deception because one person didn't love me therefore I'm completely
unlovable here's another common one I'm a failure because I failed at one thing this is the
deception or maybe I failed a couple of times or because I have a history of failing at
something therefore I'm always going to be a failure my last year of University the week
before my wife and I got married, I finally passed anatomy and physiology too I failed it three
times at University and I finally got past it that last time a week before we got married and
guess what nobody's ever checked my past or fail of anatomy and physiology on any job I've
ever had see what we do because I failed once or I failed twice
I carry this label of being a failure that I'm not quite good enough the last one I have to fake it
I mentioned before sometimes because of the past that we have well because of things that
people don't know about us we think if they knew who I really was and if they knew what I
had done they wouldn't accept me so because of that I have to fake it
I want to invite you to take out that label that was on your seat this morning and on the back
of the label there's a little glossy piece of paper I want you to write down I want to give you a
moment right now with the pen that you were given I want you to write down the lie or the
label that you hold perhaps from something you were told
in your past that came to your mind this morning as I was talking about these labels and
these lies I just want you to have an a moment of honesty with yourself and just write down
you know what I if I'm being honest with myself he is a lie or a label that I hold on to perhaps
like me it's the not enough one I want you just to take a moment we're going to pause and I
want you to identify on the back of that label not on the front but on the back what's the lie or
the label that came to your mind today as we've been talking about this you don't have to
write it down but while you're identifying that lie or that label why don't you consider what
what do you think is the deception behind that lie is it like me because you weren't the
smartest kid in the class you're like well I'm not smart enough which by the way if you study
any sort of intelligence and psychology all the book smarts they say have nothing to do with
people of wisdom later on in life but because of that I thought I wasn't enough what's the
deception behind that lie
all right you can turn your attention back up here for a moment if you're watching online and
you've been writing down in a journal or something I want to ask everyone this question
here's the question who has the right to label you this is a powerful question who has the
right to label you when I was a kid growing up, I as a I was a huge basketball fan and played
a lot of basketball and there was one particular basketball that I always loved to buy or to be
given as a gift
I don't know if you know much about basketball but the brand on this particular basketball
started with the letter s can anybody identify Spalding Spalding was the brand on the
basketball and the reason I love Spalding is because I was a huge fan of the NBA and in the
NBA they happened to play with Spalding basketballs this Spalding basketball actually helps
us to understand the answer to this question who has the right to label us the answer to that
question is really twofold the first part of that question the answer is this anyone that has
created something or manufactured something has the right to label it Spalding had the right
to label the basketball because they were the manufacturers of the basketball what I'm about
to say may divide the crowds some people watching online you might turn off the video at
this point but I carry an iPhone and some of you are like oh no he's one of those apple guys
Apple has put their logo on the back of every single iPhone on the planet why because they
manufactured it they have the right to Brand it they have the right to label it because they
manufactured it this question of who has the right to label us is actually a question that has
been going on throughout all of humanity it's an Ancient Ancient question and so I want to
take us back to an ancient poem to help us understand what does this look like for Humanity
sure you understand it from an iPhone perspective or from a basketball perspective the
manufacturer has the right to label something because they manufactured it but Jason what
about Humanity who has the right to label Humanity.
the third king of Israel a guy named David King David was a prolific poem writer he was a
just a prolific poet and many of his poems have been set to music and then they were
collected and put into a book called The Psalms and if you were to grab a Bible and maybe
you're new to the Bible and if you were to open it almost directly in the middle if you were to
put it in half you'd find the Psalms and in one of his most famous Psalms one of his most
famous poems he actually answers the question who has the right to label us leading up to
the answer to this question though there's this great great paragraph about God's presence
in our life being everywhere I love this it explains that God's presence is always with us no
matter where we go he's always with us and it's such an incredible promise to hang on to
and then David unpacks this question and answers the question who has the right to label us
let's take a look at Psalm 139 we're going to bring it up on the screen he says these words
he's talking to God in his journal he says
God for you created my inmost being
you knit me together in my mother's womb on Mother's Day as I'm reading that line
you knit me together in my mother's room all I can imagine what comes to my mind
is my grandmother or maybe that Aunt that you had sitting on the couch knitting away doing
their needlework and they made it look so easy do you remember they made it look so easy
until you picked up the needles and they started teaching you how to put things around the
needles and push them and you realize this is a very complex art
it's not that simple David says God you knit me together in my mother's womb he goes on to
say I praise you because I am keywords fearfully and wonderfully made your works are
wonderful I know them full well here's what David identified David identified that we human
beings are incredibly complex beings incredibly complex beings in fact we could spend
hours here today going through all of the facts about humanity and how complex humans
are David knew it full well and then he identifies what God labels us as don't miss this if
you've been trying to figure out how many hanging lights are on the stage behind me you've
been trying to count them lean in because this is key just like Spalding put their brand on the
basketball here's what the creator of the universe Brands you as he says you are wonderful
you are wonderful you don't have to fake it you're not useless you're not not enough you are
wonderful that is the label that the creator of the universe gives to you.
there's a second part to this question to answer the question who has a right to label us and
the second part is this when I used to buy a Spalding basketball as a child or my parents
would gift one to me what was the first thing you think my mother told me to do with that
basketball put your name on it my mom Knew Too Well that I had left many basketballs
down at the basketball court or at basketball practice or at school and so the first thing my
mother told me when we purchased a basketball she told me to put my name on the
basketball not only does a manufacturer have the right to label us but the purchaser has the
right to label you as well not only the one that created you but the one that purchased you
has the right to label you
I love the way that that Paul describes the fact that we as Humanity have been
purchased he says it this way he says you have been bought with a price and the price was
the blood of Jesus
Christ my Spalding basketballs they might have cost 39.95 or maybe 49.95 maybe an
expensive one would have been 79.95 when I was a kid I know they're much more
expensive today I'm dating myself but when it comes to you as a human being one of the
earliest followers of Jesus he describes it this way he says you have been bought with a
price and the price was the blood of Jesus Christ him everything which goes back to how
much he thinks you are worth that basketball I thought it was worth maybe 40 50 bucks you
as a human being the god of the universe thought you were worth so much that he gave his
only son Jesus so that he could purchase you and make you part of his eternal family so
who has the right to label us the manufacturer the god of the universe says that you are
wonderful you've been fearfully and wonderfully made and the purchaser also has the right
to label you and we've learned that the purchase price was the blood the precious blood of
Jesus this morning now listen to the way the purchaser describes you as a human being in
Ephesians chapter 2 we're going to bring it up on the screen it says these words
For it is by God's grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of
your own efforts, but God's gift, so that no one can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9
he sets it up so that we understand that none of us none of us would have the ability to
purchase ourselves there's no chance that we could purchase ourselves only bythe gift of
grace through the blood of Jesus can we be purchased then listen to the description that
Paul shares that the purchaser gives to us he says for we are God's handiwork
my mind goes back to the grandmother or the aunt knitting God's handiwork created in
Christ Jesus I love this to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do so
when we think about these labels these lies that we're told that become labels we hold that
we carry around with us who has the right to label you who has the right to label you
I want to suggest this morning whether you've been following Jesus a long time or maybe
you're just exploring it for the first time the manufacturer and the purchaser is the only one
who has the right to label you and the labels that he has given you are wonderful and
masterpiece wonderful handiwork of God you are his masterpiece the person who has the
right to label you that's what he says about you here's what I want to invite you to do I want
to invite you to grab that that label again that you wrote something on the back of and I want
to invite you to replace the word that you put or the words you put on the back of the label I
want to invite you to replace it with what God the manufacturer your purchaser says about
you the label he gives you and maybe it's going to be like my label instead of not enough on
the back on the front of my label it now says enough because of Jesus
maybe yours said dumb now the front of your label could say something like wise because of
him I don't know what the front of your label is going to say but we've got to reply replace
these lies that we've believed that turn into labels that we hold with the truth of what God
says about you one of my favorite author is a guy named Henry Nowin and his favorite quote
of Mine by far one that I repeat to myself every single day he says this about labels he says
this spiritual identity.
spiritual identity is not what you do it is not what you have and it's not what others think or
say about you he uses this label and I love it he says you are the Beloved the Beloved Sons
and Daughters of God.
maybe for some of you that's what the front of your label needs to say today is the word
beloved because that's what God thinks of you when he sees you he sees you as his
beloved you might say Jason that's that's a nice little talk you've given us on Mother's Day
that's wonderful but what's the big deal why is this so important I get it sometimes the lies we
were told become the labels we hold that's kind of cute it Rhymes but why is this such a big
deal for me to do anything with here's why I think this is a big deal because I've noticed in
my life and perhaps you've seen it in your life
that when we carry around these labels these labels that we hold here's what we tend to do
we tend to take something in life and we put it on over the top that's not the real us but it's
kind of a a fake version of us as opposed to the real version of us so that we can cover up all
the labels that we've been carrying around like for me this vest it represents success
because I carry the label of not being good enough or not enough I've oftentimes put on the
best of success to cover up that label that I carried around there's actually a story of two
mums that I want to wrap up with today one mom she grew up in a home where she was told
she was useless and she was worthless and she would never amount to very much you
know what that Mom did for the rest of her life she put on a vest of constantly trying to prove
her Worth to everyone around her for the rest of her life and she was never the gift the full
gift that God intended for her to be for herself and those she loved because of this vest that
she had to carry there was another mom who when she was finishing up high school she
was trying to decide what to do next and she was thinking about going on to study in
University and there was a small comment made from one of her parents who kind of
encouraged her not to go to university but to just get into the workforce they never said it but
she took that comment as a lie that she wasn't quite smart enough to go to university so
because of that she went on to get a job then she met a guy and she married him and they
had three children and she raised those three children and as she was getting to the end of
raising those three children as they were getting ready to be done with school she finally
identified the LIE
and she finally took off the vest and she actually enrolled herself in University as a
40-something-year-old and she's now this is amazing part of the story she's now counseling
others to identify their lies and replace them with the truth
that Second Story by the way is the story of my wife who carried a lie a label of not being
smart enough being dumb most of her life until she discovered her true self not her fake self
not her false self but her true self and now she is a gift to the world that God intended her to
be and now she is a gift to all of those in her life that God put her on this planet to be here's
what's at stake what's at stake is you living a fake version of your life versus a real version of
your life that's what's at stake today
God has designed you to be his handiwork you are wonderfully made and I want to invite
you to step into the true self the real life that God has invited you to step into so that you can
be a gift to yourself and a gift to every person that God has put around you here's the bottom
line the bottom line is simply this when you change your labels that has the power to change
your life when you begin to change your labels it has the power to change your life when you
begin to see yourself as the person that God has created you to be that has the power to
change your life and the lives of those around you
so I want to invite us this morning in fact I'm going to invite the band to come up and they're
going to lead us in a song and the title of this song it's titled I am who you say I am it's a
powerful song and during this song If you haven't had a chance yet to contemplate the label
that God has given you to replace the lie that perhaps was told to you when you were young
I want to invite you during the playing of this song and the singing of this song to just take a
moment and say God what is the label you have given to me that needs to replace the the lie
that was told to me this morning
let me pray for us
father I thank you I thank you for preserving the ancient words of King David I thank you for
preserving that poem that reminds us this morning that you call us wonderful thank you Lord
for the Masterpiece that you have created in each of the lives that are sitting in front of me
today that are watching online God I thank you that you have created us to do good work I
pray that we would take off the vest covering up the labels that we try to hide I pray that we
would replace the labels with the truth of what you've said about us so that we can be a gift
to ourselves but more importantly a gift
to the world because you've created us to do good work and I pray this blessing upon
everyperson listening today in the powerful name of Jesus Amen
thank you
