上帝是供应者
Morning church, it’s so great to be together today. I’m wrapped to be able to share with you and to jump into the word together. But I’m also super aware that if your household is anything like mine, your morning might look quite different to how Sundays in the past looked.
1. Home is not how we have known it. For many, it is now where we spend most of our lives. It’s our home and our workplace. there are distractions everywhere whether it’s kids flying around the house, chores, technology, whether its work.
2. I would also suggest that the world feels more uncertain than it has felt in NZ for quite some time. Many people are isolated, lonely, scared, anxious, uneasy, waiting nervously for each new announcement to know what it might mean for their life, their business, their job, their family. And this isn’t new. In fact, it’s starting to feel for some like the new normal and it’s tiring. And so I’m aware that as we come together this morning, even from afar that we all come with a different circumstance and story.
And so as we do, I pray God would meet each of us, exactly where we are at today. So let‘s pray, “Lord, thank you that you are with us. Where ever we are today, however, we are today, thank you that you are here. We pray this morning that you would speak to us. Speak through the noise, the distractions, the busyness, the worry, the anxiety. Thank you that you love us immeasurably and that we can trust you in every season of our lives. Amen.”

I wonder how these last two years have felt for you, whether it’s felt a bit like a trust fall. The trust fall that never ends. The truth is we never really had control but it’s times like this that remind us of that vulnerability. And so, today I want to speak about where we put our trust. Because where we put our trust has a huge impact on how we live our lives, and the confidence we have in uncertain times. In those moments of trust falls.
You see sometimes we falsely assume “normal” is smooth sailing but unfortunately earthly stability is not something we find in a fallen world, normal is not smooth. It's like the seasons. Brilliant sun some days and bitter cold on others. A sickness, a lost job, a betrayal…a covid case.
The feeling of control quickly unravels leaving us asking who can I trust when I’m falling, who is my provider. Where is my confidence placed? In this uncertainty and in the uncertain world we live, we can be certain that God is our provider.

In the book of Matthew, Soon after Jesus had begun his ministry a crowd started to follow him and so he sits on a mountain side and begins to teach them what it looks like to live as people of his Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. Jesus says in Matthew 6:25-33, ““Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (v25).
He is not saying food and clothing are not important. He instead reminds us that there is more to life than this. Much like wealth earlier in the chapter, these cannot master you. The term “worry,” here is, this idea of anxiously pursuing things to secure one’s needs. This idea of trusting ourselves for our own provision. Jesus says do not worry about these things.

And so you can imagine these people sitting on the mountain as Jesus speaks with their own stories and circumstances, like you and me and He gives these two examples to illustrate his point.
“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things, and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Jesus transitions from pictures of God's provision in creation to land on the heart of the matter - instead of pursuing and worrying about earthly security, seek above all God himself. In the uncertainty surrounding all your needs, you can be certain that God is our provider. And so instead, seek Him first. He encourages us to zoom out of our situation and adjust our gaze. Look at the birds, consider the Lilies. And so to just stop for a second. Out of the toil, out of the sowing and the gathering and the busyness of life and instead, to fix our eyes on Him In this uncertain world, we can be certain that God is our provider.
I want to highlight a few things this scripture shows us about who God is, our human condition of worry and what it looks like to live as people of the kingdom of God, here on earth, now, at this moment.

1) Firstly, it shows us that God is not distant in our struggles.
Look at the birds of the air, he provides for them Consider the lilies of the field, he clothes them He invites the people to lift their gaze from the side of the mountain, from their current situation to Gods provision in creation. He says if God would do so much for the birds and the lilies we can be confident that he will look after his children. And we see this all through scripture, From creation and the Garden of Eden, we see a story of provision unfold. Humanity continues to fail in its brokenness, but again and again, we see God rescue his people, providing a way back to Him.
Not only that, but this all culminates in Jesus, that while we were broken, God sent his son. (Romans 5:8) “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” We see his provision not only in creation but in him sending his Son for us. If He would go to that extent to show his love for us.. to PROVIDE a way for us. In this uncertain world, we can be certain that God is our provider.

2) So this scripture shows us that God is not distant in our struggles but it also points out how we are often we are distant in where we place our trust.
Often when we are in these moments of trust falls, these moments of uncertainty we place our confidence in ourselves, or in people or things and this often leaves us feeling insecure. Things that are not bigger than our problems, people that are not reliable. And so, we worry. And this worry becomes a fruit of confidence misplaced. Worry comes from our concern around who is in control, who is our provider.

Scot McKnight (an American theologian) writes: “Too often we believe like theists (the belief that God is a personal God), But act like deists (the belief god is distant, impersonal and uninvolved). We say we believe in God, trust God and are sustained by God, but in our actions, we do everything for ourselves, trusting in ourselves and therefore living anxiously about God’s providence. Scot suggests here that our actions often are more telling of what we truly believe than what we say.”

Jesus says the same thing a different way. “For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things, and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”
It’s the Gentiles that make these things a focus, He’s saying my kingdom doesn’t look like that. It’s the wrong focus. They are trusting themselves for their own provision and so are left worried about it.

I am on a journey with worry, for me, earlier this year I got really sick. It started out just like a normal virus but it didn’t resolve, I was in and out of the hospital with the doctors trying to figure out what was going on. They had told me it’s either some type of virus or lymphoma but we would just have to wait and see. Now, I don’t want to suggest here that I had this unwavering confidence, I didn’t. I was scared. Scared that I might not get out of the hospital. Scared I might not see my kids grow up. It was shocking to me because I had prepared a message in the few weeks prior to falling ill on being confident in God’s provision and yet in my moment of trust fall I was scrambling for security. And yet in it, God was teaching me, he was allowing me to see where my confidence was placed in regards to my health. My worry, my lack of confidence, indicated where my trust was placed in this area of my life.
For me, my worry around my health was confidence misplaced in myself. Rather than in God my provider. This is my story from earlier this year but I think we all are on a journey with worry. Maybe it’s the same areas of your life that you always find yourself worrying about or maybe it’s something just in this season.
This passage speaks to us in our worry and reminds us that in an uncertain world, we can be certain that God is our provider.

3) If God is not distant in our struggles, but often we are distant in where we place our trust, finally the passage suggests how we can close this gap. How to practically live this out. It says God is aware of your worries, and he knows what you need even more than you do. But he’s not just aware, he’s reliable. Look at his batting average, the birds of the air, the lilies of the field, look at how he cares for them, are you not much more valuable than they. Finally, he says, but seek first, before all these other things, seek first Gods kingdom.
I love the way John Piper makes this practical, Instead of being anxious, “Seek first God’s kingdom.” In other words, when you think about your life or your food or your clothes or your spouse or your job or your mission, don’t fret about them. Instead, make God the king in that affair and in that moment, and hand over the situation to his kingly power and do his righteous will with the confidence that he will work for you and meet all your needs.”

For me and my sickness earlier in the year, this meant realising I was not a reliable provider for myself, realising my worry was the fruit of my confidence misplaced in myself. I was not in control and my worry was not achieving anything, instead, it was actually crippling because it was tied to me being enough, but I’m not.
So instead of worry, I needed to continue to give my situation to God in prayer and trust Him with it, trusting him with my trust fall moment. And I don’t want to suggest this is a one and done kind of thing. I think so often we give our situations to God and then we take them back, and then we give them to God and take them back and I think we see the fruit of this happening when worry creeps back in. But in every situation, in the uncertainty of life which we all live in, we need can be certain that God is our provider and we need to keep handing it over to him. Whatever the outcome and knowing He will provide all our needs regardless of whether we actually know what they are.

What are you worrying about…. Maybe it’s ongoing lockdowns, maybe it’s unwell friends or family, maybe it’s your marriage, your relationships, maybe your health, maybe it’s your finances and ability to make ends meet. These moments of trust falls when we feel as though we are falling backwards completely out of control. I want to encourage you to be confident. Confident that in these uncertain times, we can be certain that God is our provider. Look at the birds, consider the lilies. This scripture reminds us that God that he is not distant from even our most basic needs, and yet, he encourages us to shift our focus. To lift our gaze and make God the king in every moment, and to hand over our situations to Him with confidence that He will work for us.

Something old – it is Eden revisited
Something new – it is a new creation
Something borrowed – elements from this life
Nothing blue – it is life without sin and curse

This forever life in the new heavens and the new earth – Heaven 2.0 – will be missing some key elements from our life now. Listen to these incredible words: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4); “No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.” (Revelation 22:3)

It’s a whole new world! Sin and rebellion and death and tears and guilt and everything that go with that package will be gone. It’s almost too hard to imagine what that might feel like. Scholar D A Carson tries: “With resurrection existence and no possibility of falling again, no impurity will ever be allowed to enter there. None. No one-upmanship. No greed. No holocausts. No hate. No betrayal. No jealousy. Above all, no idolatry. All who enter will be completely and utterly and totally and joyfully God-centred, because that is the way it should be.” (Don Carson)

One of the things that I particularly loved about Myk Habets book on heaven, as well as his superb theology and imagination, was the questions from children that we’re dotted through the book. Here’s a couple of them:

No timeout. No annoyance. No hate. No frustration. No hurt. It’s almost too hard to imagine, isn’t it? But that’s our hope; that’s what we’re looking forward to.
没有罚站。没有令⼈恼⽕的事。没有恨。没有挫败。没有伤害。很难想象，不是吗? 但这就是我们的盼望;这就是我们所期待的。
Prayer / 祷告
Let’s pray God, Thank you that you are not distant, but that you are close. In all seasons of our lives. In lockdowns, In our worries and our most basic of needs. 13 Thank you that you love us and that you care. Thank you that in an uncertain world, we can be certain that you are our provider. God, help us to lift our eyes. Out of our current situation, to you. Help us to hand over our situations and to rest in the confidence that we can trust you. That you will provide. Amen.
