The Lord of the Rings has some elements of biblical faith and theology, but it also has elements of mythology mixed in as well. But what this scene captures is the belief in many cultures of some kind of afterlife – a place like “White Shores” of beauty and rest and eternal peace.

Last week we began this mini-series “After I Die,” looking at what happens after we pass away. And last week we saw that the hope for Christians, those who have trusted in Jesus, is that death is simply a departure to be with Jesus in heaven. Today, though, I want to consider more this idea of “heaven.” What will heaven be like? What will we do in eternity? What does the Bible tell us about our eternal home?

I want to suggest today that for many if not most of us, our basic idea of heaven is all wrong. Last week we looked a series of cartoons about famous kiwis who had passed away – this one is after the great All Black Jonah Lomu died. The common idea of heaven in our society is clouds, pearly gates, harps, and angels. And that’s the picture many of us carry of eternity. But is that really what it will be like?

And then other Christians through in the idea of heaven being one long worship service. So what will heaven be like? Before we answer that question, we need to be clear on what we’re talking about when we say, “heaven.” Because that word can refer to two quite different things. Last week I talked about what theologians call the “Intermediate State.”

As we saw last week, when we die our bodies are buried or cremated, but our souls go to be with Jesus in heaven. So we can rightly saw, “Where’s grandma? She’s in heaven with Jesus.” That’s our hope. But that’s our temporary state, until Jesus returns to establish his eternal kingdom and raises our bodies from the dead. Our ultimate hope is our resurrection. And when that happens, we will then enter what we call the “Eternal State,” where we will live and reign with Jesus in our resurrected bodies.

Both of these get called “heaven” – and that’s fair. But it’s also a bit confusing. So that’s why I prefer to call the ‘Eternal State” – “the new heavens and the new earth.” That’s the language that gets used at the very end of the Bible, in Rev 21-22, for our eternal home, and that’s what I want to explore today. British bishop and theologian NT Wright calls where we go when we die, “Life after death.” And then where we go after the resurrection is what he terms “Life after life after death.” Or as my friend Jesus Jones, a pastor in the States terms it, Heaven 1.0 and Heaven 2.0.

So what will Heaven 2.0, the “eternal state,” actually be like? We’re going to look at some different verses in Rev 21-22, as well as some OT prophecies, especially from the prophet Isaiah. But let me hang everything I want to say on a little rhyme about marriage and a bride’s wedding day: Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue.

So, what will Heaven 2.0 be like? Well, there’ll be something old. This is how Rev 21 begins: Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth’ ... (Revelation 21:1) Now that’s actually a quote from the prophet Isaiah, so we’ll get to him in a minute. But it’s actually also an illusion, a pointer, to the very beginning of the Bible.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) As we come to the very end of the biblical story, there’s this pointer back to the very beginning of the story. Where humanity came from. So Rev 22 says: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month.” (Revelation 22:1-2)

Don’t miss this language – a river of life, a tree of life, the idea of a garden. This is the language of Eden, the original paradise where humanity was created. Listen to Gen 2: “Now Yahweh God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed… In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden...” (Genesis 2:8-10)

See, the garden of Eden was the paradise where God put the humans that he had made. There was a river, and a tree. And what many commentators believe is that part of what Revelation is saying is that the new heavens and the new earth are going to be like the garden of Eden again. It’s like we’re going back to the beginning – before the fall, before sin, before rebellion, before death and the curse.
Heaven 2.0 will be Eden revisited. Listen to these words from commentator Philip Ryken: “This is part of God’s purpose for his people: a return to the place where we began. It is a place of relationship between man and woman and fellowship with God – a place of light and life, of trees and water. This is the home where we have always belonged, and always will.” (Philip Ryken)

Remember the opening words of Rev 21 – “the new heavens and the new earth”? That’s actually a quotation from the OT prophet Isaiah: “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17) In the NT, the apostle Peter tells us a bit more in 2 Peter 3: “By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly… The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.” (2 Peter 3:7, 10)

Some people think this means that God will completely destroy this planet and the cosmos, and start again from scratch – brand-new. But I tend to think that it’s the current heavens and earth, completely renewed and re-created. I think it’s more like a farmer who clears his fields to plant a whole new crop, or a property developer that takes away the old house and completely clears the section, before building multiple townhouses on the one site.

God is going to re-create the world unto something new and beautiful. And part of what is new is described in Rev 21: “Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth, ’for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.’” (Revelation 21:1-3)

It’s a little hard to get our heads around the picturesque language, but what John is describing in Rev is heaven and earth coming together. The new Jerusalem, the place where God dwells, comes down to earth. And God now dwells permanently among His people. We would call this “heaven on earth.” That’s what the eternal state looks like – that’s heaven 2.0 – heaven and earth joined together. So that we’re living on earth as physical. Material, bodily people in new, resurrected bodies. But heaven has now come down to join earth, and God – Father, Son and Spirit – is now living with us forever.

That’s Heaven 2.0. So Australian theologian Michael Bird writes, The final state is a heaven that descends to earth and an earth that receives the heavens, so that both heaven and earth are transformed into something other than what they were before. Heaven and earth are changed into the new creation. Michael Bird This biblical picture of eternity is totally different to sitting alone on a cloud wishing for a magazine. This is living in the garden of Eden, on a new, freshly renewed earth, in physical resurrected bodies, with heaven on earth and God right there with us forever! That’s the biblical picture of eternity!
Heaven 2.0 will be heaven on earth – life as it was always meant to be

One of the most helpful books I have read in preparing for this series is actually by a kiwi theologian named Myk Habets. He’s a lecturer in theology at Laidlaw College here in Akld, and he’s written a superb book simply entitled, “Heaven.” And if you would like to do some more reading on, get this book. But here’s what he says: “The new heavens and earth will be a renewed creation, more vast, expansive, colourful, and exciting than any world we know of here; and in this world we will be physically and bodily resurrected and made fit for living here.” (Myk Habets)

So Heaven 2.0 will have something old, because it will be a renewed garden of Eden, and it will be something new – a new creation – new heavens and new earth, where heaven and earth come together and we will live with God in resurrected bodies on planet earth. But it will also have something borrowed. And by something borrowed, I mean there will be things from this present life that are good things, that will be part of eternity.

And you get glimpses from the Bible of some of the stuff that we do on this earth, in this life, that will also be part of the life to come. The book of Revelation certainly suggests that we will worship and sing to God, so there will times to enjoy that. And perhaps the artists and musicians will craft new music and new songs to worship. But there will also be so much more. It will not just be singing. For example, that passage in Isaiah 65: “They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit… my chosen ones will long enjoy the work of their hands.” (Isaiah 65:21-22)

So notice there’s building, and planting, and eating. This is a renewed Eden, remember, where even before the Fall, Adam and Eve were given work to do in the garden. So notice that last line, “the work of their hands.” – there’ll be work in the new creation. But notice again – we will enjoy it. Work without the futility, without frustration, without annoyance. Work without hevel. But then there’s another picture in Isaiah 25: “On this mountain Yahweh Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine— the best of meats and the finest of wines.” (Isaiah 25:6)

So there will be eating and drinking, parties and socialising, fun and enjoyment. We’ll enjoy hospitality with one another. We will talk and eat and laugh and play. In fact, I wonder if it will be the best of things in this life that are not sinful or wrong, even though we can mess them up with our sin. So perhaps there will be art. And theatre. And sport. And play. Imagine playing a round of golf in the new heavens and the new earth. Why wouldn’t there be golf. And while we will be morally perfect, it doesn’t mean our golf game will be perfect. What it will mean is that a round of golf will be supremely enjoyable and wonderful, and I’ll never through my clubs in disgust again. Imagine that!
And what about technology and inventions and progress? Listen to these words: “It does seem that we will eat and drink in the new heavens, and carry on other physical activities as well... Perhaps people will work at the whole range of investigation and development of the creation by technological, creative and inventive means, thus exhibiting the full extent of their creation in the image of God.” (Wayne Grudem)

Again, this is not heaven on a cloud wishing for a magazine – the biblical picture is literally heaven on earth, in physical resurrected bodies. I think that means much of what we do in this life on earth that is good and has merit will come with us.

So that’s something old, something new, and something borrowed. I want to change the last line, however, as we think about the new heavens and new earth. It’s not “something blue” but “nothing blue” – in other words, in this new paradise, there will be some key things missing.

This forever life in the new heavens and the new earth – Heaven 2.0 – will be missing some key elements from our life now. Listen to these incredible words: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4); “No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.” (Revelation 22:3)

It’s a whole new world! Sin and rebellion and death and tears and guilt and everything that go with that package will be gone. It’s almost too hard to imagine what that might feel like. Scholar D A Carson tries: “With resurrection existence and no possibility of falling again, no impurity will ever be allowed to enter there. None. No one-upmanship. No greed. No holocausts. No hate. No betrayal. No jealousy. Above all, no idolatry. All who enter will be completely and utterly and totally and joyfully God-centred, because that is the way it should be.” (Don Carson)

One of the things that I particularly loved about Myk Habets book on heaven, as well as his superb theology and imagination, was the questions from children that we’re dotted through the book. Here’s a couple of them:

Heaven 2.0 will be heaven on earth – life as it was always meant to be
And that’s because at the heart of the new heavens and the new earth – what makes them perfect – is God Himself. Listen again as we finish to Rev 21:3: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.’ (Revelation 21:3)

This is what makes heaven, heaven. So one final question: Cindy (aged 8) “Will we have to wait in line to see God?”
And the answer is no. We will have live with God forever – that’s the point. That’s what will make it heaven on earth. We will forever live in the presence of Father, Son and Spirit – and that will be heaven.
