We look today at a history-changing day in the early church where God moved in a seismic way. What happens here in our story has huge implications for your life and mine. The story takes place in Acts 2 in our Bibles. But to grasp the importance of this day, we first need to relook at what happened in Acts 1.

We saw that before Jesus ascended to heaven, he spoke about two things: one was the what, and one was the how. First, he gave them a ‘what’ – a humanly impossible mission: He said: ”you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Each day, Jesus says, you are going to stand in the dock of public life. There, you will be questioned and challenged. Each day – and each moment of the day you are to simply to point people to the good news of my kingdom. Remember, the kingdom had been the focus of Jesus’ communication and activity. Kingdom was the seismic shift we saw last week.

KINGDOM: The gospel is placed in the hands of ordinary people. Rather than get distracted by mings, people, politics or challenges, simply point people to Jesus through what you say and what you do.

Jesus says this witness is going to extend throughout the known world – all the way to the ends of the earth. This is a big ask of Jesus. Do you know how many followers of Jesus make up the first church? 120 people. That’s it. And Jesus gave them a clear mission to reach the entire world with the good news about Jesus and His kingdom. But, if you’re like me, you might have immediately jumped to the ‘how’ question: “Jesus – you’re our founder and God and you're leaving this good news of the kingdom in OUR hands? Really?!”

“Do you realise we have zero buildings and skimpy resources?”
“Do you realize the huge cultural challenges we're facing right now? The political and religious leaders hated you so much they had you crucified. Clearly, they don't want this message being shared! How are we going to do this?”

If you’re like me, – you would have looked around the room at the others Jesus had given this mission to: ‘There’s Peter – he’s got leadership ability but most of the time he’s all talk. He even denied knowing Jesus at the moment of his biggest need!’ ‘There’s Thomas – he doubted that Jesus has risen from the dead. It was only when he saw the actual marks in Jesus’ hands and feet that he believed…’ ‘James and John – there’s a reason they’re named sons of thunder.’ They get so heated. ‘Matthew the tax collector and Simon the Zealot – they have such different political allegiances. How is this group of ordinary people going to accomplish this big mission? Did you notice that just before the mission, Jesus gives the how: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Do you notice that the word ‘power’ and ‘Spirit’ are connected? In other words, “all the resources you need will be provided for you when I send my Spirit. That's why I’ve told you to wait for this gi that is coming your way.” Now, Jesus had spoken about the Spirit before. Earlier Jesus had told them things like: “It is best for you that I go away because if I don’t, the Advocate [Spirit] won’t come.” (John 16:7)

Jesus says it is better that he leaves because something new is about to happen. With Jesus on the planet, God’s presence was localized in that one person. But, the Spirit is coming in a new way and is going to embody each and every follower of Jesus so that wherever you go, you bring the presence of Jesus to renew your work, home, and neighbourhood. With the Spirit indwelling you, you have everything needed for this God-given mission. So, Jesus ascends to heaven, and here they sit…this little group with a big mission…they sit and wait – just as Jesus told them. It’s hard to wait. I’m sure multiple times one of them, perhaps Peter, looked at Mary, and said, “Do you think it happened already? Maybe we’ve missed it.” They waited in the upper room for the Holy Spirit to come for a week before anything happened. Then a special day broke the monotony.

Then, we turn the chapter to Acts 2: On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:1-2)

This is seismic activity as God disrupts the ordinary. There is a sound like a hurricane. But, it was different – it was on the inside. Let’s crank up the special effects as we keep reading…

Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. (Acts 2:3) “Tongues of fire” didn’t mean that they looked like a tongue but that that separated and were leaping out everywhere around the room. They were bouncing around the room but eventually came to rest on each one of them…all 120. Imagine the experience. God was doing something completely unprecedented and unexpected, and he did so in a spectacular way. None of them would be the same. This was a seismic shift, and they knew this was big because of what they were celebrating that day. Did you notice that this is occurring on the day of Pentecost? Pentecost was a huge Jewish celebration. There were two things celebrated on this day that has huge relevancy to why we have the special effects of fire and storm:

Pentecost: a celebration of Moses receiving the 10 commandments No doubt that morning, these first Christians recited the story about Moses receiving the 10 commandments. They would have read the way he went up on the mountain—and spectacle that occurred – the sound and storm and lightning. When Moses came down from that mountain, he was changed. They would have remembered the way God guided Moses and his people with a pillar of fire that symbolized God’s presence with his people.

This leads us to the second thing that the feast of Pentecost was about – Pentecost: a celebration of the harvest. Typically, people brought the first fruits of the harvest as a celebration to show that there was an even bigger harvest about to come. Knowing this helps us appreciate what happens next in the story. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. (Acts 2:4)

When the Holy Spirit filled them, he enabled these uneducated people to speak in other languages that they did not know or learn. Why? Verse 5 begins to tell us: At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. (Acts 2:5-6) Because of the feast of Pentecost, people were there from all over the world. When they heard the disruptions taking place, they ran to see what was going on. Here were these believers speaking in different languages. They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own nave languages! (Acts 2:7-8)

Most of the disciples were from Galilee. And let’s just say that Galilee was not known as an intellectual hot spot. It was in the sticks. Galileans weren’t known to be the kind of people fluent in world languages. No wonder they ask: how can this be? To press home the point, we have a long list of languages mentioned: Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. (Acts 2:9-11)

When you place all these areas on the map, you begin to see that the mission Jesus gave is beginning to spread all around the known world – to be my witnesses in Jerusalem and the outermost parts of the world. The Spirit is empowering them to communicate the good news to people gathered from all over the world! These people are hearing and receiving God’s word in their own language – making it incredibly personal. Those listening couldn’t believe it. They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other. (Acts 2:12)

When the Spirit empowers the church, it can lead to observers asking, “What does this mean? What is this all about?” Peter preaches the first sermon about how Jesus came, died for our sins, and was raised from the dead and that His kingdom is able to renew all things. He invites them to be part of the faith family. Some welcomed the news. Others criticised it. But, look at what happened? Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all. (Acts 2:41) Wow - 2500% growth in one day. Megachurch on day one of the church’s life!

How did it happen? This leads to our second seismic shift:

Spirit: You have the Spirit dwelling in your life bringing the power and presence of Jesus to renew your work, home, and neighbourhood. Let me illustrate how this power works in our lives with a coke fountain. I’ve got a standard 1.25 litre of diet coke here. And, I also have some ordinary mentos mints. (taste one). There’s nothing at all special about them. They’re tasty but by themselves, there is no wow factor. Unless you’ve seen this before, you wouldn't imagine a lot can happen when these things combine. But, let’s see what happens. Actually – let’s go back and replay that this in slow mode because it’s super impressive. Actually, why not throw in some special effects – just because we can! That’s power! … In fact, some people have got the coke to spray as high as 9 metres in the air with just 5 mentos mints and one bole of diet coke! It kind of makes you wonder what is in this stuff, right? This power is nothing to the power and presence of the Spirit.

As we follow along in the story of Acts in our devotional guides, we’ll see the way this community was expectant on God to change hearts and lives. These ordinary believers are able to respond in supernatural ways. Let me give you one example from chapter 4 where Peter and John are dragged before the Sanhedrin. This was the Jewish ruling body who just weeks earlier had arranged the crucifixion of Jesus. That should have sent them into a tailspin. Remember, a month earlier these two disciples deserted and ran from Jesus out of fear. Peter even denied knowing him. But, look at what happens now that they are empowered by the Spirit. They declare with boldness: “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19)

This seismic shift of the Spirit led these fearful followers to do what Jesus asked them to do – be witnesses to him – and they do so boldly. This is exactly what Jesus said would happen: “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works because I am going to be with the Father. (John 14:12). Now, Jesus, did some pretty great things – even rose people from the dead! What could be greater than what Jesus did? I guess it’s the scope and new initiatives that have happened since he left.

Over the last 2000 years, this same Spirit has empowered followers of Jesus to step into civil rights movements, elevate the status of women, and build hospitals and universities. These same Spirit-empowered followers of Jesus in political theory, human rights and dignity, education, compassion, and the love of enemies. Millions and millions of people throughout the world have come to know and love him all because ordinary people bore witness to Jesus in their work, home and neighbourhood. It's all because the gospel has been placed in the hands of ordinary people empowered by the Spirit. There are a couple of things that can happen that distract us from experiencing the seismic shift of the Spirit.

#1 A misplaced fascination on the Power of the Spirit loses sight of the Purpose of the Spirit.

Remember this story takes place at the Feast of Pentecost. People brought their apples and beans and pomegranates as a way to thank God and trust Him for a bigger crop still to come. One of the reasons God waited till this day is because of the harvest – so many people were coming from all over the known world. But, so often we get distracted by the experience and not the harvest. A friend of mine likes to illustrate it by showing a picture of a state-of-the-art Combine Harvestor.

He says, so many of us get fascinated by the machinery of the Combine Harvestor. “Look at how impressive it is! What a great machine! Let’s study it and experience it. Let’s feel the vibrations and power. We might talk about the horsepower.” But, anyone that has a combined harvestor is primarily focused on what? The harvest! God is still wanting to fill people with His Spirit today – not for them to have a misplaced fascination with the Power of the Spirit but to be equipped and mobilised for mission. Did you know that within two blocks of your home, it’s likely that someone is about to give up on something? It might be one more fight with their partner, a child being expelled from school, a lost job; giving up on relationships, on hope, on life. It might be that the pandemic has caused their business to crumble or their job to go. It might be that they are isolated and have no way to get groceries or Panadol.

God has placed you right where you are to be a witness to Jesus. You have the Spirit dwelling in your life bringing the presence of Jesus to renew your work, home, and neighbourhood. So, rather than having a misplaced fascination with the Power of the Spirit, let’s set our sights on the Purpose of the Spirit – the Mission to be His Witnesses. There is a second area that can distract us from experiencing the seismic shift of the Spirit.

#2 We get confused between the presence of the Spirit and the filling of the Spirit.

There is one thing different about our story to what you and I face today. It’s that we don’t have to wait for a future me for the Holy Spirit to empower us. Rather, at any me, believers can receive this filling and empowering of the Holy Spirit. In the Book of Ephesians, which was written quite sometime after these events on the Day of Pentecost, Paul speaks about the way every believer is now sealed with the Spirit. “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

So, at the moment you come to know Jesus, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your life. But just because the Spirit is resident in your life does not mean that you have the filling or empowerment of the Spirit at work in your life right now. Let me illustrate it this way. Here is another bole of diet coke. And here are some more mentos mints. The only difference now is that I have le them in the wrapper. Let’s see what happens: Nothing! That’s a bit of a killjoy. This is so different to the powerful coke geyser we saw before. It’s the same coke and mentos. The only difference is that the mentos haven’t been unwrapped.

Isn’t this how many of us live?

Yes, we have the Spirit indwelling us. That happens the moment we come into the family of God. But, many live without the power of the Spirit at work in their lives. They do things in their own power and wisdom. They get afraid. Self-help doesn’t work so well. Too many believers live ineffective lives because they have never unwrapped the power of the Spirit in their lives. The Spirit is still there but we don’t have the power in our lives that can be activated to have a seismic power for Jesus. That’s why the apostle Paul instructs the same believers who he had earlier said were sealed with the Spirit – he urges them: “Be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

The verse could beer be translated, “Be empowered by the Holy Spirit.” The verb ‘be filled” is a present tense command. In other words, this is something that is meant to be a regular activity for a believer. It’s not something that just happens in some one-off event but something we ensure continues to happen. Many of us have had significant moments we can refer back to when the Spirit-filled us. But, it’s not meant to just be a past experience. But, something we continue to lean into.

Noce too that this is a passive command: “be filled.” You’re not the one doing the filling. Rather, you are placing yourself in a situation that enables you to be filled. We don’t do the filling. The Spirit is in our lives all the time, but his empowerment has to be activated by us. Isn’t this what we all need right now? We’re facing huge challenges and disruptions all around us.

Jesus says the solution is to trust the message of the kingdom (seismic shift 1) and the presence and power of his Spirit (seismic shift 2).
The Spirit wants to give you boldness knowing you are naturally fearful.
The Spirit wants to transform you into a generous heart and away from a stingy heart.
The Spirit wants to give you gis and skills to serve and bless others around you.
The Spirit wants to give you listening ears to draw closer to friends and your spouse and children.
The Spirit wants to help you be calm when you naturally get angry.
The Spirit wants to help you be about others when you naturally think about yourself.
The Spirit wants to dwell in your life bringing the presence of Jesus to renew your work, home, and neighbourhood.

A practice I have each morning, and at times throughout the day is to quiet my heart and pray a simple prayer of three words. It’s the oldest prayer in the history of the church: Come, Holy Spirit

I’d like to finish this message with a moment of quietness as we allow the Spirit to fill us anew to bring the presence of Jesus to renew your work, home, and neighbourhood. Come, Holy Spirit. For people that don't know you today – help them respond and come into a life-giving relationship with you. For all of us – draw near. Fill me. Empower us for this big mission. Come Holy Spirit. Amen.
