What do these things have in common?

big red button… Bubble wrap…

The answer is they are simply irresistible.

When anybody sees a red button – they want to do what? Press it!! Even if you know you’re not meant to – there is something irresistible about it.

And the all-time ultimate: bubble wrap. I become a 5 year old immediately. It is just needing to be popped…

Some things in life are simply irresistible.

The theme of Scripture from beginning to end is that Unity amidst diversity is simply irresistible.

If you are new to Christianity, and you begin reading the Bible – something we encourage around here – you will quickly discover that …

God loves diversity

You open the Bible and read the creation account. And you read how God makes a variety of animals – elephants, giraffes, zebra, dogs – even cats!

He creates fish of the sea – from the massive blue whale to the snapper – even the sea horses.

He created plants and trees. Just how many shades of green does one designer need? [picture of landscape with a lot of different greenery]. Speaking of colours, he even allowed red + yellow to create orange – an important colour among our families and next gen due to our story behind it.

You see this love of diversity at the beginning of the Bible – and you see it in the final book of the Bible – how God will one day gather people to him “from every tribe and language and people and nation.”/ Revelation 5:10

Are you beginning to see how God loves diversity!

We’re in a world at the moment where we have this weird dissonance/conflict. It’s that many they value diversity – yet at the same time – we cancel out people who have different opinions to us. It’s not healthy. In other words, it’s easy for people to say they value diversity – but unless you carry the heart of God who loves diversity - we tend to form tribes with people who are just like us.

I understand how this works. I used to dream of a world that looks like this

(multiple photos of me! throughout the screen). After all, other people seem to ruin things.

 They think differently from me

 For some reason, they can’t see it the way I see it. They don't understand.

 And they hinder progress because they come from a different perspective.

 If it wasn’t for others, I would experience zero disagreement or conflict.

But, I’ve to come to understand why God loves diversity and why he wants you and I to love it too. More about that in a moment.

As you continue to read your Bible, you will not only discover that God loves diversity.

You will also discover that …

God loves unity

It’s why the Psalmist declares:

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!... For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”/ Psalm 133.

God loves it when people get together and share life together. Rather than isolating themselves, they gather together. They connect. They honour and protect each other. That’s something God blesses because it reflects his heart.

Did you know that on the very night Jesus was arrested, he prayed for you and me?

“I pray for those who will come to know me…”/ John 17:20

What did he pray for? He prayed for unity.

“I pray that they will all be one…”/ John 17:21

In case we missed it, Jesus continues:

May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me./ John 17:23

There are many good things Jesus could have prayed for. Knowing what He was about to go through, the number one thing he prays for is that we would experience unity. Unity is the one that is close to his heart.

Jesus knows that life is hard in this world. We need each other to get through those tough times.

He also knew that he was giving us all a big mission to make disciples of all nations. It’s an enormous vision. He knows it can be fulfilled in unity together.

God loves diversity. God loves unity.

Question: Q: Why is unity amidst diversity so important to God? Why does He want it to be

important to us?

The Answer? A:God has experienced irresistible community Himself!

He knows how good it is.

He wants us to experience the joy of it.

He believes that when we do, we will also be able to invite others to experience this too.

How has he experienced it?

Well, back to John 17 – Jesus says in that prayer:

“so they may be one as we are one… May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”/ John 17:22-23

Christians talk about God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three persons – who dwell together as One God.

Some of you here are still exploring Christianity and a belief like this gets confusing. How can we talk about one God, and then mention three persons? Simple logic teaches that if He is three, then he cannot also be one, and if God is one, he cannot also be three. To those of us that have been Christians for some time, it’s statements like this that can be a bit embarrassing.

Yet, the various authors of the Bible go to great lengths to teach this ‘three-in one’ idea about God. The word church leaders use to sum it up is the word ‘Trinity’ or perhaps better – ‘the Triunity’ of God. Even though terms like ‘trinity’ or ‘tri-unity’ are not found in the Bible, this is a truth that permeates throughout its pages.

For instance, when Jesus was sending out his followers, he said: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ….” – Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

[It’s not “names” (plural) but “name” (singular). It’s not “person” (singular) but three persons – Father, Son and Spirit].

If we peel back the layers of time and space of eternity past, we find God existing in an eternal relationship with himself: Father, Son and Spirit.

Our world right now needs unity amidst diversity – desperately. But, it’s so hard to find a model of unity amidst diversity where people of all ethnicities and stages and backgrounds and languages and political views are genuinely welcomed. Where no one is excluded or cancelled from the group.

But, there is something about God that actually shows us genuine unity amidst diversity.

So, it’s fair to say that we can actually learn a whole lot about irresistible community by simply looking to Who God is.

We can learn a lot about healthy relationships and dynamic teams by delving into the delving into the workings of the Tri-unity of God.

There we see the very best of relationships! Their relationships have remained healthy and vibrant for years and years – going all the way back to – well let’s say – eternity past (!).

Let me share five traits of irresistible community that all come from looking at the inner workings of our Tri-une God. Each of these traits is what God also calls us to pursue – so that we can experience irresistible community.

1) Irresistible Community exudes relational warmth

In the united and diverse Trinity, we see the way each member exudes relational warmth to each other.

In his gospel, John says, “No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.”/ John 1:18

When John uses ‘near the Father’s heart’ he has the idea of Jesus leaning back on His Father’s chest. It’s the way close friends /family would lean back and recline close to each other. John uses it because he is wanting to convey the deep love and affection that exists between Father and Son.

Because this is what Jesus has experienced, He wants us to experience too.

This is why Jesus provided such acceptance and warmth to everyone around him.

Diverse people would be drawn to Jesus.

People from different backgrounds: people of high standing like Nicodemus along with woman shunned by society – like the Samaritan woman.

Three were young and old.

People from different faiths and backgrounds – all were drawn to Jesus.

There were even people with different political views.

I’ve mentioned this before – but when you look through the list you of the names of the 12 disciples – Matthew gives us the names of the twelve in his gospel:

“…First, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his

brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of

Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot…”/ Matthew 10:2-4

I love the way Matthew puts a description next to two of these people: 1) Matthew ‘the tax collector” and 2) Simon the Zealot.

Matthew is trying to highlight something important.

If you know your history, you will know that the zealots were a group of people who hated the Romans and anyone who worked for the Romans. Especially tax collectors. He was as far to one side of the political spectrum as you could be at the time.

Matthew was a tax collector who was on Rome’s payroll – effectively as far to the other side of the political spectrum you could be. I imagine Jesus having them share a room together! I love the way he brought diverse people together into the same team.

All these diverse people came to Jesus and found a place where they could belong. A place where they were seen and noticed. Everyone was invited to his table. No one was ever excluded. They became united.

This is what Jesus wants us to experience with God.

I entered into that relationship as a 10-year-old when I prayed that God would bring me into relationship with himself. If you haven’t responded to Jesus’ invitation, there is no better time than today. It’s as simple as saying ‘yes’ to Jesus – ‘Jesus, I want in on this relationship.’ Through Him we are invited into a relationship with God – Father, Son, and Spirit – a relationship where we are accepted and loved.

Jesus also wants us to experience this with each other.

He knows there is something that happens in real unity among real diversity that is simply irresistible.

It’s what we’re called to do:

“Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you.” / Romans 15:7

Our relationships with each other are meant to be like the relationships that exists within the Godhead. Father-Son-Spirit exude relational warmth with each other.

They welcome and accept each other.

What we see in the divine relationship is meant to affect the way we live as couples, parents and children, friends, colleagues, and our relationship with each other as Gracecity.

That’s the first trait. Here is a second one:

2) Irresistible Community expresses generosity

Listen to the way Jesus speaks to his Father: “All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.” / John 17:10

Some of you would love your older kids to talk to you like that!

There is nothing stingy in this relationship. There is no holding anything back. Complete trust and generosity.

This is the way the Father, Son and Spirit have treated each other for eternity. They are not selfabsorbed. They don’t keep to themselves.

We are bombarded with a message about the need for us to find ourselves. Marketing plays with the idea that we deserve that product and some ‘me’ time! The idea is that it is in those me times, we can finally experience life.

All this stands in complete opposite to the way Jesus talks about the way we find life:

“Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it” / Mark 8:35

We're told to find our lives. Jesus says the way to find it, the way to save it – is by losing it, by giving it away.

How did He know this? He experienced this in the divine relationships. He knew that healthy relationships and friendships are marked by this generosity of spirit.

These 6 letters can make two different words.

One of them is United.

That’s the irresistible community that Jesus wants us to experience.

But, of course, if you take the same six letters and move just one letter – you come up with a word that means something entirely differently: Untied.

There is a big difference between these two words.

Untied is the opposite of united.

We often say ‘United we stand. Divided we fall.’

There is nothing irresistible in disunity. The strength and power is in unity.

When you move that ‘I’ to the wrong place, it moves the word from united to untied.

Isn’t that the way unity is harmed as well?

It’s harmed when “I” gets in the way.

It’s harmed when I push for my rights and my desires as more important than anybody else.

The only way through is this is for me to move the “I” and focus more on the you – and unity.

There is something more important than being right. It’s being right with each other.

Our enemies greatest weapon against the church and her witness is disunity!

Our enemies greatest weapon is wider society is to break up relationships and turn people against each other.

When we are divided, we quickly become weak and ineffective.

Our western society is breaking apart – because we are losing the ability to respect the

humanity of every person as made in the image of God.

Instead, we’re beginning to have a primary focus on ourselves, my needs, my problems… we have lost that generosity of spirit towards each other. We expect – even demand – that we are at the centre and other people should revolve around us.

Again, contrast that with Jesus: “all I have is yours, and all you have is mine” – this generosity of posture.

Imagine what this generosity could actually do among parents and children, spouses, work colleagues, flat mates, friends, church relationships.

There is a third trait of irresistible community:

3) Irresistible Community honours each other

In the United and Diverse Trinity, there is mutual honouring of each other.

Each of the members of the Trinity have a huge respect for each other. No one person demands that the others revolve around him. Each voluntarily pours out their love, delight and adoration to the others.

The biblical authors use a word for this - “glorify.” This term ‘glorify’ has in mind bringing praise to the others. It’s like they’re cheering the others on – wanting them to be in the spotlight, enjoying what the other is doing and how they do it. They defer to each other. They delight in being in their presence.

So, throughout the gospels, we read that Jesus glorifies the Father and the Father basks in the glory of His Son This has been going on for all eternity. Jesus describes the Spirit as living to “glorify” him.

And the Spirit miss out either. In fact, Jesus says to the disciples that it’s better that for them that he leaves and the Spirit comes. It’s like – ‘Guys, wait till the Spirit comes and dwells in you.

I know you’re sad that I’m going. But, I can’t wait for you to meet him. He’s really special.’

This is how the Persons of the Tri-Une God have behaved for eternity. It’s inspiration to you and me about the nature of relationships that go the distance, the type of relationships that are simply irresistible.

It’s why Scripture calls us to speak well of each other.

Take delight in honouring each other… Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!... Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone./ Romans 12:10-18 (NLT)

As we honour each other, as the Tri-une relationships honour each other, we experience irresistible community.

There is a fourth trait of irresistible community:

4) Irresistible Community is inter-dependent

In the United and Diverse Trinity, we see the way each member needs each other.

The gospel writers go to great lengths to show Jesus praying for help from his Father… and being led by the Spirit…Though Jesus is the Son of God, the one with amazing power to raise

Lazarus from the dead, He says He can’t do anything out of the context of his relationship in the Tri-unity of God.

Listen to the way Jesus talks about this:

“I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.” / John 5:19

Elsewhere, Jesus says: Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. / John 14:10 (NLT)

The Father and Son work in tandem. They are tightly knit together so that no one functions alone. No one runs off and does his own thing. They have these inter-dependent relationships.

If the all-powerful God works inter-dependently, what might that say to our cultural custom of independence?

We often think that maturity is expressed through independence - ‘no-need-for-anyone.’ But this is not the Christian understanding of healthy discipleship. In fact, the refusal to be dependent on others is not a mark of maturity but immaturity.

It’s why Scripture says: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”/ Galatians 6:2

We came into this world totally dependent on the love, care and protection of others. And most of us will go out of this world totally dependent on the love and care of others. And this dependence is not an evil, destructive reality. This dependence is part of the design of God.

In the years where we might be more depended upon, we still need to realise our own for others.

The Trinity shows us that irresistible community happens where we are able to express our need for each other in a diverse but united community.

There is one trait…

5) Irresistible Community encourages different roles serving in a common mission

In the United and Diverse Trinity, each team member has different functions around a common mission

Each member of the Trinity has different functions. At the same time, each empowers and depends on the other members to do their function.

We see these different roles existing in everything God does. Typically, the Father is the origin

(source) and end, the Son is the agent; the Spirit is the means.

So, take salvation for example. We see God as Trinity involved.

Peter writes, “ … who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood.” – 1 Peter 1:2

So, the Father is the origin, the Son is the agent; the Spirit is the means. Different roles but united in the same mission.

It’s no wonder that the church has the same framework. Paul wrote:

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work./ 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NIV).

Some people are gifted to care. Some are gifted to give. Some are gifted to teach. Some are gifted to lead projects. Each of us part of a team where we have different functions around a common mission together.

While there is order and different roles in the Trinity, each has equal standing – each has all the attributes that make God ‘God.’

In the same way, we are all equal in our standing but there are different roles and giftings.

This is how healthy community and relationships functions. Each understands their unique roles and a common mission.

Early leaders of the church came up with a word for the way the three persons relate to each other. It’s called “perichoresis.” The word is a simple Greek word drawn from the language of the NT.

We don't have a clear English equivalent but our word choreography derives from this. It makes sense because it is very much like a divine dance. There is this constant movement where each encircles the other and moves towards the other.

They dance in and out exalting in each other, deferring to each other, celebrating the other. Throughout eternity, Father, Son and Spirit have enjoyed a delightful life-giving partnership. They are so bound together in such close unity that the life of each flows through each of the others, and each has access to the thoughts and experiences of others.

That’s an amazing relationship to observe. This is the type of relationship God wants us to experience.

Friends, God loves unity amidst diversity.

The reason He does is because He Himself experiences it.

He knows how simply irresistible it is.

He wants this to be our experience too.

This is why Scriptures calls us to do everything we can to protect and promote unity.

Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all./ Ephesians 4:3-6

Imagine people saying - did you see Gracecity?

They have such different views on a range of things – yet look at the way they exude warmth towards each other.

They come from 55 different countries – yet look at the way they have such a generous posture towards the cultural differences among them.

They come from such different political viewpoints but they honour each other.

They come from such different social backgrounds yet there are interdependent relationships – all expressing a need for each other.

They have such different gifts and interests – yet they serve in a common mission.

When this happens, there is something irresistible.

An irresistible community that welcomes people just as we are. An irresistible community that

transforms us to be all who God calls us to be.
